An e-bike taster route up into the vineyards - combined with sections on the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg" and "Moselradweg"
Grapevines galore! Suitable as a taster route for e-bike beginners as well as for sporty touring cyclists, with great views of the Moselle valley, the wine-growing villages, and the vineyards of the region.
Insights into the route:
The short circular route starts in the Kues district, leads into an ancient Moselle valley, then on a former railway track (part section of the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg") back to the current Moselle course. Along the "Moselradweg" (main route), it then goes along the Moselle bank from Mülheim back to Bernkastel-Kues. The cycle route offers great views and nice opportunities to stop in the Moselle villages of Kues, Lieser, Maring-Noviand, Mülheim, Andel, and Bernkastel. A highlight along the way is the detour to the Heldensicht - the "Most Beautiful Wine View 2020" in the Moselle wine-growing area. You can also look forward to a water-treading basin at the Siebenborn monastery, which provides refreshment, especially on hot summer days.
General information
Directions
You start from the bus station in the Kues district. On the former railway embankment, the route leads to the outskirts and then up into the vineyards. Immediately, there are splendid views of the Moselle valley. A special panorama can be enjoyed at the "Heldensicht", which was voted "Most Beautiful Wine View 2020" of the Moselle region in a public online poll on the website of the German Wine Institute (DWI). A detour to this viewpoint is signposted along the way. After you reach the outskirts of Lieser, there is another climb to tackle. It goes up to Paul’s Church. Until the 16th century, it was the religious center of fourteen villages and a much-visited pilgrimage site. On October 8, 1848, one of the largest rallies in the Rhine Province with 15,000 people took place here. The valley at the foot of the church is an ancient valley of the Moselle (meaning, in ancient times the Moselle once flowed there before carving a different riverbed further south). The route continues to the former Siebenborn monastery, where you meet the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg". The monastery is now a winery, and the monastery mill houses a restaurant. A water-treading basin invites you to rest as well. You then continue the route on the lower section of the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg" and turn left at the sawmill. The cycle path follows the Lieser stream to its mouth into the Moselle and passes the district of Maring. At the mouth of the Lieser, you take the feeder route to the Moselle bridge and cross over to Mülheim. Through the town, follow the cycle path signs towards Bernkastel-Kues. It leads onto the main route of the "Moselradweg". Via the Andel district, you reach Bernkastel-Kues and the starting point of the route.
