Wine cycling uphill and downhill with a return route along the Moselle bank - an exciting round route with sporty climbs and numerous wine panoramas.
Wine cycling tour for e-bikers and sport cyclists with a guarantee of wide views of the Moselle valley, the wine villages and the heights of the Hunsrück
Insights into the tour:
The round tour starts in the Kues district and initially leads into an ancient glacial valley of the Moselle, where the Moselle once flowed before shaping another riverbed further south. Afterwards, it goes up onto the "Brauneberg", high above the Moselle valley, with its well-known vineyard "Brauneberger Juffer", then past further vineyards upstream to Piesport. The return route downstream follows the "Moselradweg" (main route). Along the way, there are many great views, opportunities for refreshment or breaks in the vineyards, Moselle villages or at the Moselle shore, as well as lots to see. Highlights include the "Most Beautiful Wine View Moselle 2020", the Paul Church in the ancient glacial valley, the former Siebenborn monastery, the "Sauerbrunnen" leisure area, a Roman pressing facility and the "Moselloreley".
General information
Directions
You start from the bus station in the Kues district. The route leads you along the former railway track to the edge of the city and then up into the vineyards. Immediately, you are offered magnificent views over the Moselle valley. A special panorama can be seen from the "Heldensicht", which was voted the "Most Beautiful Wine View 2020" in the Moselle region during a public online vote on the website of the German Wine Institute (DWI). A detour there is signposted along the way. After reaching the outskirts of Lieser, you climb up again - to the Paul Church. Until the 16th century, it was the religious center for fourteen villages and a much-visited pilgrimage site. On October 8, 1848, one of the largest demonstrations in the Rhine Province took place here with 15,000 participants. The valley at the foot of the church is an ancient glacial valley of the Moselle. The former Siebenborn monastery is the next intermediate destination. Today, the monastery is a winery, and the monastery mill houses a restaurant business. A water treading basin also invites you to take a break. After crossing the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg" you pass the sports field into the Noviand district of the twin municipality Maring-Noviand, then drive through various village streets ("Bahnhofstraße", "Bernkasteler Straße", "Kreuzberg") and then through the fields up towards the Moselle on the high "Brauneberg" with the well-known vineyard "Brauneberger Juffer". At the top, along the edge of the slope, you cycle past the Brauneberg shelter and various resting and viewing points. You reach the Monzel district of the twin municipality Osann-Monzel, cross the "Moselstraße" there and shortly afterwards encounter a rest island with a resting area and a view of the Monzel church St. Nicholas at the edge of the village. There, turn right, then immediately left again, pass a winery and turn left (second possibility) into a vineyard path that leads through the vineyards above the wine village of Kesten. Then you roll downhill into a side valley to the Kesten leisure area "Sauerbrunnen". Here, besides the fountain where the Romans are said to have quenched their thirst, a water treading basin invites you to refresh yourself. The carbonated Sauerbrunnen water comes from about 15 to 20 meters deep. Due to the high iron content, the casing is rust-brown colored. Over the access road to the leisure area, you roll a few more meters downhill towards the Moselle, then turn right at the first hairpin bend and then left again uphill through a woodland into the vineyards. It goes steadily uphill to the K52, the popular "Panorama Road" above the Moselle wine villages of Piesport and Minheim. You cycle for only a short distance on the district road, but then immediately follow the switchback-like farm roads downhill into the Moselle valley to Piesport. Those interested may visit the magnificent ceiling frescoes called the "Piesporter Himmel" in the Rococo church of St. Michael. Also worthwhile is a detour to the faithfully restored Roman pressing facility on the "Ausoniusufer". A multifunctional device there presents a grape pressing process in a video modeled after Roman times.
Back to Bernkastel-Kues, you follow the "Moselradweg" (main route). The route runs along the opposite, right bank of the Moselle, since the Piesport "Moselloreley", a mighty rock reaching down to the shore, does not allow passage on the left Moselle bank. At the "Moselloreley", the Moselle is especially deep with around 9 meters.
