Geology, history, and panoramic views.

At Wasserliesch, the Moselle leaves the German-French scarp landscape and enters the Rhenish Slate Mountains via the Trier valley basin. You can clearly see this by the colored sandstone and Muschelkalk layers near the Moselle between Igel and Wasserliesch and by the sharp dividing line of the "Igeler Fault." The start and end point of the hike is the marketplace. From there, the path leads with a pleasant alternation of ascents and descents to the heights between the Saar and Moselle rivers. It connects numerous cultural and natural landscape highlights. Orchid enthusiasts will find one of Germany's richest occurrences in the nature reserve Perfeist. From the heights of the "Alte Lager," the path descends into the Albachtal landscape protection area. Experiencing panoramic views of natural and cultural landscapes as well as varied detailed views, you follow a picturesque path along the stream and return via the viewpoint at the upper Roman road to the starting point.

Cultural and natural highlights: Nature reserve Perfeist with numerous orchid species, special rock formations, Grana Monument, and Löschemer Chapel.

General information

Directions

Where the Moselle leaves the border area to Luxembourg and the Saar flows into the Moselle lies Wasserliesch, also called the "Gateway to the Upper Moselle." After starting at the marketplace with remains of a Roman "Villa Rustica," you follow uphill the Cross or Stations Way, which you will encounter several times. After about 500 m, you cross the Roman road and turn left after about 40 m behind the gardens. The path leads gently down along the slope until you turn right into the forest. A short ascent leads you onto the Moselle Trail, which accompanies you for a while. After a hollow path, turn right at the first house; following the signposts, you will find along a former French military camp a rock formation with iron ore-bearing layers. Continue onto the rock plateau where the Grana Monument commemorates the battle at the "Conz Bridge" from 1675.

At the tennis courts, go first left, then right slightly uphill into a forest dominated by sweet chestnut trees. There, the trail runs below striking colored sandstone rocks. You pass a cave carved into the rock that served as a bomb shelter during World War II. After a longer ascent, you reach the Moselle Trail again. Remarkable is a memorial site in front of a historic quarry. Here a rest area invites you to enjoy the panoramic view of Trier with its cathedral and basilica. Shortly afterwards, under tall beeches at Germany's first Shinrin-Yoku forest bathing place, you can experience the calming effect of nature. From there, you can already see that the vegetation changes abruptly. After crossing a geological fault line, the first calciphilous orchid species grow directly by the path. The ascent on the Stations Way is interrupted by a relaxing detour to the barbecue hut, where you can rest and enjoy the wide view over the Moselle valley and to Luxembourg.

The Löschemer Chapel at 343 m is the highest point of the Wasserliescher Panoramic Trail, which here lives up to its name. The panoramic view into the Trier Moselle valley far into Luxembourg and to the Ardennes, the Eifel, and the Hunsrück will remain in your memory for a long time. On the high plateau, continue to the nature reserve "Auf Perfeist" with its unique variety of rare orchids. Passing the "Alte Lager" - remains of a Roman guard post or perhaps traces of a Celtic refuge fort - you descend to a rest area with views of the wine village of Fellerich.

For the next few kilometers, you wander comfortably through high and low forest and then in several loops down to the Albach, which you cross on a footbridge.

The Moselle and Panoramic trails now lead together uphill again, and at the forest exit, a beautiful view opens up over Fellerich and the Albach valley.

Meadows and vineyards accompany the trail to another rest area above an old vineyard wall, from where the forested hill with the "Alte Lager" is clearly visible. Immediately after, the path crosses the "Alte Gracht" and follows it downhill to the Albach, which is crossed at a pumping station. In gentle ups and downs, always accompanied by the babbling brook, you first reach the Upper Mill and then, following the old mill creek, the hotel-restaurant Albachmühle, which invites you to rest.

Passing old quarries, you ascend steeply to the Roman Road viewpoint with a wide view over Wasserliesch and the valley plain at the confluence of the Moselle and Saar rivers as far as Konz. Over the deeply cut "Schlangengracht", an old stonemason's path, you reach the starting point again at the marketplace, where you can find more dining options before your journey home.
