Of wine, villas, and water.
The Moselsteig detour Longuicher Sauerbrunnen runs through a varied wine and cultural landscape. The path connects touristically interesting areas and offers numerous highlights: the Roman Villa Urbana, magnificent views, a biotope with unique vegetation & rare animals, old trees, and of course the eponymous Longuicher Sauerbrunnen - a spring fed by the Devonian layers of the Hochwald offering strongly iron-rich, carbonic mineral water. The culturally and historically valuable local image of the Longuich community including attractive dining and accommodation options forms the perfect setting for this route. Due to the immediate proximity to the motorway, in the first section of the route from the Roman Villa Urbana to the entrance to the Longuich forest (approx. 1.2 km), depending on wind direction, some noise can be expected.
Update January 4, 2025:
Due to the very wet weather phase, there are currently larger problems with the path conditions on some sections. Please consider this and adapt clothing and shoes accordingly. Thank you very much.
General information
Directions
From the starting point at the large carpool parking lot, the detour first runs through the road underpass. You can warm up a bit on a flat meadow path. Soon the trail is reached, which winds slowly uphill through orchards. In the upper part, where vineyards also accompany the path, a water treading basin is passed. At this point, you also have a view of the Roman Villa Urbana surrounded by vineyards. Here you should take the time to visit the partially reconstructed site. The Roman building is accessible from the outside at any time. On Sundays, guided tours are also offered that lead into the interior. The view from the villa into the Moselle valley shows that the Romans really chose a beautiful spot for their residence.
Directly next to the Villa Urbana, the circular route now leads steeply uphill as a trail along the vineyard. The path meets a vineyard path that continues to rise and at its highest point by a wooden recliner offers a wide view of Longuich, the steep opposite vineyards, and downstream into the Moselle valley. To pass under the motorway, the path descends briefly. On two sides, the dammed Longuich brook is passed. In the valley of the Longuich brook, it now continuously goes uphill. The impressions on both sides of the path are varied: vineyards, orchards, flower meadows interspersed with hedges, forest. At a hairpin bend, you reach a lovely resting place on a meadow.
Now it goes into the forest for a longer section. The first part descends briefly until you cross the Kirscher brook, which you then follow slightly uphill to its source area. The trees on both sides of the soft forest path become more and more impressive. The path reaches a shelter. Here stand huge veteran trees and the resting places under the leaf canopy invite you to take a long break. As a refreshment, you can also use the water from the acid spring a few meters away. The water is very rich in iron and colors the surroundings rust-red after contact with the oxygen in the air. It is a bit hard to leave the beautiful natural idyll, where only the chirping of birds "disturbs" the peace.
The further path leads over trails with soft forest soil, the incline is barely noticeable. The following forest path leads the detour along the forest edge. The view extends over the fields and the orchard meadow to nearby Sang-Neuhaus. You have to be a little careful not to miss the turnoff from the forest path to a beautiful forest trail. After passing the small woodland, you reach an asphalt path, which is crossed directly. From here you have a wide panoramic view to the north. The ridge of the Meulenwald and the witness mountains of the Buntsandstein in the Wittlicher Basin form the horizon. A path now runs parallel from the forest edge, initially somewhat steeper, then moderately downhill. The branches of the large beech trees bent over the path have created a green roof over the way. Shortly after, the path reaches a small forest pond: a good place to rest or enjoy the natural idyll on the wooden recliner.
After a short section, you come to a large meadow on the plateau. The view extends over the vineyards of the Moselle valley far into the Hunsrück heights. The following vineyard path also runs for quite a stretch at the same elevation. To the right over the vineyards, the view goes into the Moselle valley, to the left alternately accompanied by forest, fields, or meadows planted with fruit trees. The circular route leaves the vineyard path and now leads slightly downhill along the forest edge. After a last orchard meadow, the detour overcomes the edge of the slope and leads as an earthen path steeply down the slope in switchbacks. Through two underpasses, you reach the outskirts of Longuich-Kirsch. Through winding alleys, it goes towards the Moselle. The Moselbahnstraße, which the detour crosses, runs exactly on the route of the former Mosel railway, better known as the "Saufbähnchen." For about 800 m, the path now follows the Moselle bank. On the opposite Moselle side, you can see the steep terraced vineyards of the Longuich and Schweich wine estates. High up on the forest edge runs the Moselsteig on the stage from Schweich to Mehring. This stage is a beautiful hike to experience the wonderful landscape from a different perspective. The path now turns at a right angle toward the town. Through a quiet street in Longuich, the starting point at the carpool parking lot is quickly reached.
