The Meulenwald, whose extension reaches almost to the bank of the Mosel near Schweich, serves as the namesake for this detour and allows the hiker to immerse themselves in fascinating worlds.
"Enjoy the diversity of hiking with all senses." This is certainly a main slogan of the Meulenwald route Schweich.
On one hand, there is the Mosel valley, wide open through the glacial valley, with its vibrant cultural landscape, and on the other hand, the quiet Eifel side along the Quinter stream with its wild romantic stories.
Enriched by the tree world trail, where exotic 100-year-old trees stand, and hidden lakes that recall the time of charcoal burners, the premium path leads to the highlight, the viewing platform of the Meulenwald-Moselblick, with its special aura. On the descent, the "Heilbrunnen," as a regional pilgrimage site, offers a place for rest and gratitude.
General information
Directions
As if the Eifel wanted to push a toe into the Mosel, the "Rotenberg" near the town of Schweich, the "Gateway to the Middle Mosel," stretches its distinctive sandstone rock right to the Mosel shore and thus also becomes the gateway to the Meulenwald.
The certified premium circular hiking route impresses especially with its diversity. At the starting point of the "Meulenwald route Schweich," visitors experience the wide view over meadows into the Mosel valley shaped by infrastructure.
Afterwards, the hiker immerses into a wild romantic and legendary landscape, the Meulenwald (including forest area 2012)!
From the Forestry Office Quint, the eventful tree world trail accompanies the hike. On this trail, not only a variety of exotic trees that are sometimes over 100 years old grow, but forestry staff also repeatedly present exciting and interesting stories about the forest in a child-friendly and easy-to-understand way.
Quiet and rich in water, on the other hand, is the side of the ridge facing away from the Mosel and the next section of the detour. Nothing at the "Kaiserhammerweiher" reminds of the industrial history of the 17th-century "Quinter Hut," to which the reservoir owes its origin and expressive name.
From here, the path climbs steadily along a quarry— those who initially take a small detour will definitely be rewarded— up to the three springs of the "Meilenborn," a remnant of the history of numerous charcoal piles in the still 7000-hectare large forest area "Meulenwald."
Via the idyllic "Buchenheld" rest area—also the highest point of the route—the path leads hikers to the perceived highlight of the premium route, the viewing platform "Meulenwald-Moselblick" with its special aura.
To the left, the hiker can see the fringes of the "Wittlicher Senke," to the right the wide Mosel valley. It takes much imagination to envision that the glacial valley of the Mosel once flowed from Trier into the Wittlicher Senke or towards Föhren. Only later did the Mosel succeed in breaking through near Schweich and thus decisively opening the "Gateway to the Middle Mosel."
After this wonderful rest, the path descends along narrow trails past former Schweich quarries to the regional pilgrimage site "Heilbrunnen." The mineral spring, whose power was discovered in 1602, is still a place for reflection and silence.
Anyone willing to engage with this is warmly invited to rest here.
The Meulenwald route now rushes towards its goal. However, shortly before the end, the hiker reaches the newly created biotope and recreational area of the town of Schweich below the Heilbrunnen. In summer, among other things, a refreshing water treading basin invites you to relax your feet in cool water and let your soul dangle before happily covering the last meters back to the start and finish portal.
Equipment
Sturdy footwear is required.
