Geology, history and vision.

At Wasserliesch, the Moselle leaves the Franco-German strata and enters the Rhenish Slate Mountains with the Trier valley basin. You can clearly recognize this by the red sandstone and shell limestone layers that come close to the Moselle between Igel and Wasserliesch and by the sharp dividing line of the "Igel Fault". The starting and finishing point of the hike is the market square. From there, the trail leads to the heights between the Saar and Moselle in a pleasant alternation of ascents and descents. It combines numerous cultural and natural highlights. Orchid lovers will find one of the most species-rich occurrences in Germany in the Perfeist nature reserve. From the heights of the "Alter Lager", the trail continues down into the Albachtal nature reserve. Experience panoramic views of the natural and cultural landscape as well as a variety of detailed views as you follow the course of the stream on a picturesque path and return to the starting point via the viewpoint on the upper Roman road.

Cultural and natural landscape highlights: Perfeist nature reserve with numerous orchid species, special rock formations, Granadenkmal and Löschemer Chapel.

General information

Directions

Wasserliesch, also known as the "Gateway to the Upper Moselle", is located where the Moselle leaves the border area with Luxembourg and the Saar flows into the Moselle. After starting at the market square with the remains of a Roman "Villa Rustica", you follow the cross or station path uphill, which you will encounter several times. After approx. 500 m, cross the Roman road and after approx. 40 m turn left behind the gardens. The path leads slightly downhill along the slope until you turn right into the forest. A short ascent leads you onto the Moselsteig Trail, which now accompanies you for a while. After a hollow path, turn right at the first house and follow the signposts along a former French military camp to a rock formation with layers of iron ore. Continue onto the rocky plateau, where the Grana monument commemorates the Battle of Conzer Brück in 1675.

At the tennis courts, first turn left, then right and slightly uphill into a forest dominated by chestnut trees. There the trail runs below striking red sandstone rocks. You pass a cave carved into the rock, which served as a refuge from bombs during the Second World War. After a long climb, you reach the Moselsteig Trail again. There is a remarkable memorial in front of a historic quarry. A rest area here invites you to enjoy the distant view of Trier with its cathedral and basilica. Shortly afterwards, you can experience the calming effect of nature under tall beech trees at Germany's first Shinrin-Yoku forest bathing area. From there, you can already see that the vegetation then changes abruptly. After crossing a geological fault line, the first lime-loving orchid species grow right on the edge of the path. The ascent on the station trail is interrupted by a relaxing detour to the barbecue hut, where you can rest and enjoy the sweeping view of the Moselle valley and Luxembourg.

The Löschem Chapel at 343 m is the highest point of the Wasserliesch Panorama Trail, which lives up to its name here. The distant view of the Moselle valley in Trier, far into Luxembourg and as far as the Ardennes, the Eifel and the Hunsrück will stay with you for a long time. The route continues along the high plateau to the "Auf Perfeist" nature reserve with its unique variety of rare orchids. Past the "Old Camp" - the remains of the walls of a Roman guard post or perhaps traces of a Celtic refuge - you descend to a rest area with a view of the wine village of Fellerich.

The next few kilometers are a leisurely hike through high and low forest and then in several loops down to the Albach stream, which you cross on a footbridge.

The Moselle and Panorama trails now lead uphill together again, and at the end of the forest there is a beautiful view of Fellerich and the Albach valley.

At km 11, you will find the "Elli's and Rosi's Kleine Jause" rest stop from the Biewers winery in Tawern-Fellerich in the middle of the vineyard about 150 m off the path on a hill. Here you can enjoy snacks, refreshments, delicious wines and a fantastic view of the vineyards around Fellerich.

Meadows and vineyards accompany the trail to another rest area above an old vineyard wall, from where the forest-covered hilltop with the "Alter Lager" is clearly visible. Immediately afterwards, the path crosses the "Alte Gracht" and follows it downhill to the Albach stream, which is crossed at a pumping station. In gentle ups and downs, always accompanied by the sound of the stream, you first reach the Obere Mühle and, following the old mill stream, the Hotel-Restaurant Albachmühle, which invites you to take a break.

Passing old quarries, the route climbs steeply uphill to the Römerstraße viewpoint with sweeping views over Wasserliesch and the valley plain at the confluence of the Moselle and Saar rivers as far as Konz. Via the deeply incised "Schlangengracht", an old stonemason's path, you return to the starting point at the market square, where you will find more places to stop for refreshments before your journey home.

Tip: You will find another starting point at the "Albacher Stuben" restaurant. Free parking is available here.
