Athletic views above the Moselle valley.

This stage is particularly athletic: The path alternates swiftly between steep ascents and descents. The climbs are rewarded with fantastic distant and deep views. Those who want to take it easier can rest on the Huxlay plateau. Active relaxation is promised by a round on the local Finnish track or the health and exercise trail. At the destination in Mehring, the hiker can experience the over 2000-year-old winegrowing tradition up close – in one of the numerous local gastronomic establishments.

General information

Directions

The 6th stage of the Moselsteig starts in the center of Schweich. From the Stefan-Andres fountain, the path leads you along Brückenstraße past the Tourist Information Römische Weinstraße to the Church of St. Martin, which characterizes the city skyline. From here, it goes along quiet local streets to the outskirts. After the motorway underpass, you reach the first vineyards. Now begins the long and initially steep climb to Mehringer Berg. The path mostly leads between the forest edge and vineyards, so the view into the Moselle valley distracts from the effort. It becomes slightly flatter from the barbecue and shelter Rupperoth and the following forest section.

After crossing the Landwehrgraben, the Moselsteig reaches a small plateau – an ideal spot for a rest with the best view! Here, too, the side path to the valley towns of Longuich and Longen branches off. It now goes uphill again, first on a path through oak-dominated forest, later on a wider path through the open meadow landscape. After a final steep section, you reach the summit of the Mehringer Berg, which at over 400 m above sea level is one of the highest points on the entire Moselsteig. The panorama is magnificent and extends not only into the Moselle valley but also far across the surrounding heights of the Eifel and Hunsrück. On clear days, the Erbeskopf, the highest point in Rhineland-Palatinate, can even be seen on the southeastern horizon.

Through the sparse meadow landscape, the trail continues briefly along the ridge, then steeply downhill and shortly after along a field into the forest. After a section along the forest edge, the Moselsteig now runs through open terrain on both sides. Now, the view to the east is especially overwhelming. When you come to the lounger: take a seat and enjoy the fabulous panorama towards the Hunsrück, crowned again by the Erbeskopf! As on the last few meters, the Moselsteig is also accompanied further by the Moselsteig side route Zitronenkrämerkreuz. It goes moderately downhill to the edge of the slope, which offers a beautiful view of the river bend at Mehring. From a chapel, you walk through pine forest, accompanied by an animal educational trail and on springy wood chips. Over a wooden staircase arranged as the “Himmelstreppe” (stairway to heaven), you reach the Huxlay plateau with numerous seating and resting options, which you should definitely use for an extended break. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the view of Mehring and the Moselle.

The descent to Mehring begins with a path that winds down the vineyard slope in tight switchbacks. At another rest area, the path ends – hikers who want to visit the Roman aqueduct in Pölich can reach the town via the side path branching off here. The Moselsteig continues on a gently descending vineyard path to the town outskirts of Mehring. After a short stretch through the town, you reach the Mosel bridge. Via stairs, you come to the bus stop on the federal road, or via the side path parallel to the Moselle into the town center with dining, accommodation, and supply options.

Tip

Today's stage is not very long, and the resting opportunities at the Huxlay plateau are so diverse and lovingly designed that you should definitely plan a longer break here. The way to Mehring is then no longer far. With the beautiful view, a glass of Moselle wine tastes particularly good here.
