Through large vineyards into the Middle Ages.

This stage leads from the wine villages Kesten and Osann-Monzel to historic Bernkastel-Kues. You pass impressive rock cliffs with beautiful slate layers and cross world-famous vineyards like Brauneberger Juffer. On hillside trails, it goes steadily uphill — with occasional views of the Moselle. Numerous charming spots invite you to rest and eat. Finally, you reach Landshut Castle, which majestically towers over Bernkastel-Kues and offers an impressive view over the Moselle and the famous Moselle town, in whose picturesque old town this stage ends.

General information

Directions

The starting point of this Moselsteig stage is the St. Nicholas Church in Monzel. The connecting path from Kesten also leads here. Passing several wineries, the route initially goes to the edge of the village. Immediately you are in the midst of the vineyards! On the still gentle ridge of the Brauneberg, you hike to the viewpoint Monzeler Kätzchen. From here the view extends to the stage destination Bernkastel-Kues. The path changes from the ridge to the upper hillside trail through the vineyards, which consistently offers exciting views of the Moselle valley. Below the Kammerfelsen, the slate comes very close to the path. Here you get the impression of hiking almost vertically above the Moselle. Parallel to the high trail, the Moselsteig finally reaches the shelter on the Brauneberg through a small forest area with numerous resting opportunities.

Then you continue hiking on the upper hillside trail, accompanied on the left by slate rocks and on the right by steep vineyard slopes. Especially striking is the vine-covered Umlaufberg on the opposite side of the Moselle. By the way, you now have a view of the entire Moselle valley between Kesten and Bernkastel-Kues! The descent from Brauneberg leads through a forested area, and after a short section along the access road to Brauneberg, you reach the bridgehead of the Mülheim bridge. Side paths branch off here to the nearby wine villages Maring-Noviand and Lieser. The Moselsteig leads on the sidewalk over the bridge and immediately you are in the center of Mülheim village.

After passing under a road at the edge of the village, you reach the vineyards. Here the path now climbs to a resting place at the Helenenkloster. The view from here mainly falls on Lieser, on the edge of which lies a striking castle. The relatively straight path now leads accompanied by dense shrubs through the gentle hillside towards Bernkastel-Kues. When the side valley of the Goldbach is reached (here there is the possibility to get to Andel via a side path), the Moselsteig leads steeply upward along the edge of the forest in the valley. The path continues to rise in the forest until the large Andel barbecue hut is reached — an ideal place for a refreshing rest before you approach the stage destination in Bernkastel. Also enjoy the beautiful view of the Moselle valley!

The further path winds abwechslungsreich through the forest slope. Downward over a serpentine path, you reach steeply rising slate rocks, and the path crosses a gorge-like incised stream valley. A short section along a vineyard interrupts the forest, including a pretty view from the vineyard wall onto the Moselle. The forest section ends at the St. Anna Chapel. Bernkastel and Landshut Castle are now already very close, and the benches in front of the chapel invite you to rest. A large mosaic on the front facade of the chapel draws attention. A path leads to the access road to the castle and then steeply upwards to the saddle above the town. From here, a detour to visit the castle is recommended! You can also get to the youth hostel or continue to use the side path to Monzelfeld. The last part of this stage now leads down through the vineyards of Burgberg via a stairway to Bernkastel. After a few meters, you reach the medieval market square framed by half-timbered houses in the town.
