At the destination. At the start. On the Moselsteig.
The final stage mostly leads through vineyards over the Hexen hill, which features a monument commemorating the medieval witch burnings. Over the panoramic path with green meadows and countless fruit trees, it goes to Koblenz. An access path runs along the railway track and past the old castle to the city's landmark, the German Corner. At this spot, especially popular in summer, the Moselle flows into the Rhine. A cable car ride to the impressive Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, a visit to the colorful sites of the former BUGA grounds, or a very relaxing boat trip perfectly round off the hike.
General information
Directions
Right in front of the train station, you start this stage, which leads you to the Moselle estuary at the German Corner in Koblenz. The Moselsteig access path initially runs through the narrow streets of Winningen before the ascent begins through the vineyards. Via a zigzag path with a beautiful view of the village lying below, you then reach the Domgarten hut with a pleasant resting area and a fantastic view over the vineyards, over Winningen, and along the Moselle!
Together with the RheinBurgenWeg, it continues along the edge of the slope. After crossing a side valley, you walk through meadows and past vineyards to the L 125 – alongside it, the Moselsteig now runs slightly downhill along the sidewalk. The path leaves the main road again and now leads uphill into the vineyards. Once at the top, you can once again enjoy a beautiful view of the Moselle valley: this time upriver and back to the Domgarten hut. The Moselsteig then leads as a path into the forest towards the Hexen hill. The memorial stone here commemorates the witch burnings in the Middle Ages.
After a short stretch through the forest, the path merges into the upper vineyard path, on which you now reach the access road to Koblenz/Winningen airport. However, you leave the road immediately again heading towards the slope edge where a shelter with a beautiful view invites you to a lengthy break! Around Winningen are the most extensive vineyard terraces in the entire Moselle area. They offer habitat for many special and rare animal species, such as the Apollo butterfly. Therefore, the Winningen vineyard terraces are also considered a hotspot of biological diversity (https://www.lebendige-moselweinberge.de/leuchtpunkte.html).
On a steep path, it then goes down to the lower vineyard path, which the Moselsteig follows upriver with excellent views. After a longer section almost without elevation changes, it finally goes downhill. You now walk through an area with meadows and fruit trees. This section is particularly charming when all the cherry trees are in bloom! By the way, the Gül cherries are very well known in the region. Further through the new development area of Güls, you reach the old outskirts of the Koblenz district at Gross-Heiligenhäuschen. Here ends the main Moselsteig route.
To the German Corner, you now follow the Moselsteig access path logos, which initially lead you to the Moselle riverbank. From here, you can already see the Gül railway bridge, on which you cross the Moselle one last time. On the other side, it immediately leads onto the towpath, which runs directly along the water. You now walk the last kilometers along the riverbank. If you want to learn more about the residents of the river, a visit to the Mosellum at the last Moselle dam is definitely worth it! With its exhibition on the wildlife of the Moselle and the fish ladder, it offers an exciting stopover before you continue towards Koblenz’s old town. Along the old town, you pass the last Moselle bridges and reach the dignified endpoint of this stage: the German Corner at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle.
