Technically easy, moderately physically demanding route with long forest sections through the beautiful Buntsandstein area of the Meulenwald.
Since 2003, the holiday region Roman Wine Route has offered mountain bikers in the region a mountain bike trail network of more than 200 km. The guarantee for a nature- and environmentally friendly as well as athletically attractive route design was the intensive cooperation of the Trier Forestry Office, which developed the route proposals, as well as individual mountain bikers from the racing scene who approved the athletic attractiveness of the routes. In total, 5 routes were marked with lengths between 27.9 and 76.3 km. The fact that you do not necessarily have to go to the Alps to find an interesting mountain biking area is also demonstrated by the descriptions of the elevation differences covered during the individual routes. The altitude meters vary from 718 m to 2119 m. The individual routes, which lead over the foothills of the Eifel and Hunsrück, offer a lot of variety, repeatedly provide fantastic views into the Moselle valley, and lead as circular tours even foreign mountain bikers safely back to the starting point. The routes partly run through the world-famous vineyards Thörnicher Ritsch and Klüsserather Bruderschaft. Holiday mood sets in when you enjoy the beautiful landscape and compensate the lost fluids at the end of a route with an “Après-Bike”.
General information
Directions
Character:
Technically easy, moderately physically demanding route with a long forest section through the Buntsandstein area of the Meulenwald.
70% gravel, 25% asphalt, 5% single trails
Other entry points:
Schweich (most convenient entry point)
Föhren - exit towards Naurath
Naurath - town center
from all other towns via bike paths to the named entry points
From the town center of Schweich you reach the route via Bahnhofstraße at the junction turning right into the street called Langfuhr. This leads under the railway overpass into the fields. In hilly terrain, you circumvent the Föhrener Ried nature reserve and reach Föhren after passing under the railway line. In the town you cross the main road before the railway bridge heading towards Naurath but stay on the bike path along the railway line leaving the town center and after a loop in the new development area reach the forest entrance at the town exit towards Erlenbach.
A gradual climb through the forest towards Naurath follows. At the entrance to Naurath you cycle right down into the town center, then turn left out of town and uphill into the forest. In a large bend you reach the highest point of the route (400 m above sea level), where you first cross a district road and finally a state road, which you turn left onto (heavy traffic, caution!), but after about 200 m you leave again to the right via a parking bay. Then you enter the forest and have a short single-trail descent here. You cross a paved forest road and continue on a root path section, then join another forest road and follow it downhill along a stream.
At the junction of the forest road with a district road, our path turns left over a parking lot, which you leave again uphill at the opposite end in the forest. After a gentle climb at first, which ends in a short, challenging section, the route leads downhill to the already experienced state road, which must again be crossed.
On the opposite side you first ride parallel to the road but leave it after about 200 m to immerse yourself in the depths of the Meulenwald for the rest of the tour. A gentle ascent follows, then a fast descent on well-developed forest roads past mighty Douglas firs. After constant, slight ups and downs and many changes of direction you reach the Moselle-side edge of the Meulenwald at the Steinkaulhütte and leave it via a fast single-trail descent, which ends in a sharp right curve at a valley-side parking lot. There is a renewed ascent into the slope of the forest area with the final descent to the Haardthof, where the state road to Föhren is crossed and then the railway line is passed under. Along the railway line it finally goes back to Schweich.
Safety Guidelines
Nature and Mountain Biking
It is the greatest joy for mountain bikers to enjoy the charms of nature and landscape, the silence of the forests, and the variety of open countryside far from the traffic noise of busy roads, even off heavily frequented cycle paths.
The use of nature, whether as a lone touring cyclist or as a participant in a training group, must be coupled with the awareness that misbehavior can cause damage to forest and fields, flora, and fauna.
Reasonable general behavior and a few basic rules ensure that mountain biking does not become a nuisance.
Equipment
A functional mountain bike and a bicycle helmet should of course be part of the standard equipment.
Public transit
DB route Trier-Koblenz to Schweich station.
From Schweich station it is only about 150 m to the start of the MTB route.
Maps
VG Schweich Mountain Bike Map
The Schweich municipal association has specially signposted five routes for forest and meadow cyclists. From the airy high-altitude route above the Moselle loop to the circuit through the Meulenwald, there is something for every taste. All routes are of moderate difficulty and are suitable for both beginners and ambitious riders. The latter will appreciate numerous alternative route sections that add the necessary bite to the standard stages. The maps include a short description of the route, the mandatory elevation profile, and a map of the route alignment. Thanks to the map, nearby entry points can also be quickly found — the five circuits can be started at different locations along the Moselle.
The price is 5.00 €.

Hiking map 1 : 25,000 Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route
ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
Schweich (Moselle). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “Holiday Region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route,” the Eifel Association supplements its series of hiking maps on the Moselle with the now fourth map at the scale
1 : 25,000. This hiking map series, published by the Eifel Association in cooperation with Moselland Tourism and the tourist information offices of the affected municipalities, will complete the Eifel Association’s map series after all MOSEL hiking maps are finished with the Moselle run in the southeast.
The new hiking map replaces, with slightly changed sheet layout, the previously issued and now outdated hiking map “Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Route” by the State Office for Surveying and Geobase Information Rhineland-Palatinate. Hikers will be reliably guided on hiking routes in the holiday region Schweich along the Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side jumps, and dream loops. The Meulenwald hiking area is also shown on the map.
The Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, both awarded as “Germany’s most beautiful hiking trails,” pass through the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route. Not only with the associated circular hiking routes called “side jump” and “dream loop” does the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route form an extensive and varied hiking trail network. This network is supplemented by sections of the Eifelsteig with two partner routes, the Moselle Heights Trail, as well as other main hiking trails of the Eifel Association and numerous regional hiking trails also included on the new hiking map. Selected are also some cycle touring routes and five mountain bike routes on the Roman Wine Route shown on the map.
Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7, and 8 as well as the five side jumps “Longuicher Sauerbrunnen,” “Zitronenkrämerkreuz,” “Mehringer Schweiz,” “Klüsserather Sagenweg,” and “Moselachter” form the core of this new hiking map. Especially the four Moselsteig stages and the five side jumps are described bilingually not only textually in the inner part of the hiking map but also with the presentation of the elevation profile giving hints on the hiking difficulty.
The basis for this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25,000 of the State Office for Surveying and Geobase Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs a uniform price of 7.90 EUR and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Route, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Moselland Tourism and in bookstores, as well as of course at the Eifel Association e. V., Stürtstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. It can also be ordered online at any time at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
