Technically easy to moderate, less physically demanding ride through well-known vineyards of the upper Middle Moselle.
Since 2003, the holiday region Roman Wine Route has offered regional mountain bikers a mountain bike trail network of more than 200 km. Guarantees for an environmentally friendly and sportily attractive route design were the intensive cooperation of the Trier Forestry Office, which developed the route proposals, as well as some mountain bikers from the racing scene, who approved the sportiness of the routes. In total, 5 routes were marked out with lengths ranging from 27.9 to 76.3 km. That you don't have to go to the Alps to find an interesting mountain biking area is also proven by the information about elevation differences covered during the individual routes. They vary from 718 m to 2119 m in altitude meters to be mastered. The individual routes, which run over the foothills of the Eifel and Hunsrück, offer a lot of variety, repeatedly offer fantastic views of the Moselle valley, and, as circular routes, safely bring the outsider mountain biker back to the starting point. The routes partly run through the world-famous vineyard sites Thörnicher Ritsch and Klüsserather Bruderschaft. Holiday atmosphere arises when you enjoy the beautiful landscape and at the end of a tour compensate the fluid loss at the “après-bike”.
General information

For a friendly warm-up on an almost flat vineyard path, we leave Leiwen and reach route 4 amidst the vineyards. The path turns - for a short stretch identical to route 3 - above the stream valley towards the forest, upon reaching which you say goodbye to route 3 with a short downhill left and tackle the climb through the steep vineyard slope. Past the vineyard chapel, you soon reach the upper edge of the vineyards and follow the path between them and the forest. Over a saddle, the path leads into the slope above Leiwen and leads to the Panorama swimming pool and then to the Zummeter Höhe . Here you enjoy the famous view over the Moselle loop before descending into the Trittenheim vineyards and crossing them in the direction of Konstantinhöhe. On the new vineyard road, you descend to the Moselle and follow the bike path to Trittenheim . You cross the town through the center toward the Trittenheim vineyard chapel, from where a longer climb on asphalt follows to the height.
Between field hedges and vineyards, you ride "high level" over the Moselle to the split with
Route 4 , which subsequently offers the view of the Moselle high above the valley on the hillside edge (2.2 km, climb: 67 m, descent: 91 m), and
Route 4+ , which leads us past a natural monument (oak group) over the fields and finally loops back through abandoned gravel pits and mixed forests into the vineyards above the Moselle tributary Salm. (5.4 km, climb: 133 m, descent: 158 m).
A descent follows to the outskirts of Klüsserath (entry Klüsserath) . After crossing the district road towards Rivenich, a short single-trail downhill leads down into the Salm floodplains, which you enjoy riding uphill. You then cross the stream and leave the valley floor into the vineyards opposite, through which you fight your way up to reach the forest of Thörnich on the height after crossing a district road on level ground. At its edge, you approach the famous vineyard site "Thörnicher Ritsch". An overwhelming view of the Ensch golf course and the "different" Moselle valley compensates for the efforts of the previous ascent. On the steep slope overhanging the Moselle, a single trail leads down, which with a sharp right turn leads back uphill out of the forest into the vineyards and from there down on asphalt into the Kautenbach valley. There, the state road with heavy traffic (caution!) greets us. Following the road downhill, you reach the Thörnich bridge, which takes us across the Moselle and hands over to the care of the Moselle bike path on the opposite bridgehead. You follow this about 500 m upstream on the Moselle, turn left into the vineyards, and ride the shortest way back to Leiwen.
Safety Guidelines
Nature and Mountain Biking
It is the greatest joy for mountain bikers to enjoy the beauty of nature and landscape, the silence of the forests, and the variety of open countryside far from the traffic noise of busy roads, even away from heavily frequented cycling paths.
Using nature, whether alone as a touring cyclist or as part of a training group, must be coupled with the awareness that misbehavior can cause damage to forests and fields, flora, and fauna.
Reasonable general conduct and a few basic rules ensure that mountain biking does not become a nuisance.
Equipment
A functional mountain bike and a bicycle helmet should naturally be part of the standard equipment.
Tip
The very beautiful Panorama outdoor pool Leiwen is located directly on the route.
Public transit
With the RegioRadler Moseltal, for example, you can almost have the bus accompany you on a bike tour along the Moselle shore. Between Trier and Bullay, the bus line of Moselbahn follows the Moselle course passing through Ruwer, Schweich, Mehring, Leiwen, Neumagen, Bernkastel-Kues, and Traben.
Up to 22 bicycles can be transported in the bike trailer. The three daily rides in each direction are available morning, noon, and afternoon, making half-day tours conveniently possible. Along the RegioRadler Moseltal, you have connections at many locations to the Moselle route Trier – Koblenz, in Trier to train routes in all directions, and in Bullay to the Mosel wine railway heading to Traben-Trarbach.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25,000 Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route

Schweich (Moselle). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “Holiday Region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route” the Eifel Club supplements its hiking map series on the Moselle with now the fourth hiking map at scale
1 : 25,000. This hiking map series, published by the Eifel Club in cooperation with Moselland tourism and the tourist information offices of the municipalities involved, will complete the Eifel Club's map collection after finishing all MOSEL hiking maps with the Moselle course in the southeast.
The new hiking map replaces, with slightly changed map area, the previously published and now outdated “Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Route” hiking map by the State Office for Survey and Geoinformation Rhineland-Palatinate. Hikers are reliably guided on the hiking tours in the Schweich holiday region along the Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side routes, and dream loops. The hiking area Meulenwald is also shown on the map.
With Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, two long-distance trails awarded as "Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail" run through the Schweich holiday region on the Roman Wine Route. Not only with the connected circular hikes named “side routes” and “dream loops” does the Schweich holiday region on the Roman Wine Route offer an extensive and varied hiking trail network. This network is supplemented by sections of the Eifelsteig including two partner paths, the Moselhöhenweg, other main trails of the Eifel Club, and numerous regional hiking trails also contained on the new hiking map. Also included are a selection of cycle hiking routes as well as five mountain bike routes on the Roman Wine Route shown on the map.
Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7, and 8 as well as the five side routes “Longuicher Sauerbrunnen,” “Zitronenkrämerkreuz,” “Mehringer Schweiz,” “Klüsserather Sagenweg,” and “Moselachter” form the core of this new hiking map. Particularly the four Moselsteig stages and the five side routes are described bilingually in the inner part of the map, and their altitude profiles provide information about the difficulty level of the hike.
The basis for this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25,000 from the State Office for Survey and Geoinformation Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs a uniform price of 7.90 EUR and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Route, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Moselland tourism and in bookstores as well as at the Eifel Club e. V., Stürtzstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. The map can also be ordered online 24/7 on the internet at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
