Technically medium difficulty, physically appealing route not only because of its length through diverse landscapes: first over Mosel heights with steep climbs and single trail descents, later in topographically calmer long forest sections of the hinterland.
Since 2003, the Roman Wine Route has offered mountain bikers in the region a mountain bike network of more than 200 km. Guarantees for a nature- and environmentally friendly as well as sportily attractive route design were the intensive cooperation of the Trier Forestry Office, which developed the route proposals, as well as individual mountain bikers from the racing scene who approved the sporting attractiveness of the routes. A total of 5 routes were designated with lengths ranging from 27.9 to 76.3 km. That you don't necessarily have to go to the Alps to find an interesting mountain bike area is also evidenced by the elevation changes covered during the routes. Heights to be overcome vary from 718 m to 2119 m. The individual routes, which lead over the foothills of the Eifel and Hunsrück, offer a lot of variety, repeatedly offer dreamlike views into the Mosel Valley, and also lead even the non-local mountain biker safely back to the starting point as circular routes. The routes partly run through the world-famous vineyards Thörnicher Ritsch and Klüsserather Bruderschaft. Vacation moods arise when enjoying the beautiful landscape and compensating fluid loss at the end of a tour at the “Aprés-Bike.”

Character:
85% gravel, 10% asphalt, 5% single trails
Special:
In the area of Leiwen, the route is identical to Route 4 for about 2 km
Entry points:
Mehring - Sports field (most convenient entry point)
Mehringer Höhe - 200 m from the carpool parking lot towards Mehring, at the edge of the forest
Detzem - road to the Five Lakes Viewpoint, at the wayside cross at the edge of the forest
Leiwen - through Urbanusstraße, turn left past Urbanshof
from all other towns via the Mosel bike path to the mentioned entry points
Opposite the Mehring sports field, the route leads through the street Am Sportplatz 150 m out of town into the vineyards. From here, the route steadily climbs and reaches the entrance to Route 3 at the edge of the forest. With a consistent gradient, height is quickly gained, allowing beautiful views over the Mosel valley. Halfway up, the district road is crossed, and shortly after a second time ( Entry Mehringer Höhe ) before reaching the well-known observation tower "Five Lakes Viewpoint". (Climbing is worth it!) Shortly after, it passes the Detzem BBQ hut, then left onto a wide service road that can be enjoyed rolling between forest and meadow towards Detzem.
Upon entering the forest, separation into
Route 3: continues straight down to the valley-side forest edge, where at the wayside cross turn right ( Entry Detzem ) (1 km, ascent: 0 m, descent: 69 m) and
Route 3+: turns left downhill in wide bends on a gravel forest path to the vineyards, then a steep climb back to the normal route (2.7 km, ascent: 141 m, descent: 210 m) at the wayside cross above Detzem.
High above the Mosel valley between forest and vines with slight ups and downs to Brachberg, from there a pleasure descent to the edge of Leiwen ( Entry Leiwen ). On an almost flat route through the vineyards towards Bachtal, first on asphalt, later on gravel uphill until a left turn past the fish pond, then winding upward to the Sonnenberg holiday village. From there downhill, initially towards Zummeter Höhe, 500 m before turn right down into the Dhron valley. The descent ends immediately at the state road (caution!), which must be crossed.
Along the "Little Dhron" and the Dhron valley dam, the route goes uphill to Büdlich, from there about 1 km on the district road downhill back to the "Little Dhron." Upon reaching the stream, turn left onto a field path between forest and stream, then meadow and forest. The route leads over the crossing path and an old bridge to the road, then downhill to the junction of the road from Naurath. Here the Dhron valley is left and continues with a long but moderate ascent, first on asphalt, then on forest paths, to the heights of Neumehring, where the highest point at 460 m above sea level is reached.
Before, the highway and then the district road are crossed, and a well-developed forest path through a large deciduous forest complex is followed. A single trail, many changes of direction, climbs and descents make the path quite varied. Upon reaching the state road, the route follows it about 500 m to the left before turning right at the Thick Oak into the forest, across fields and back into the forest. Soon the routes split:
Route 3 , right to the Kaster hut high above the Mosel valley (0.5 km, ascent: 0 m, descent: 14 m) and
Route 3+ , left downhill in wide bends, later a sharp right turn single trail descent to the vineyards of Fell and then a gentle climb back to the Kaster hut (3 km, ascent: 74 m, descent: 88 m)
From here, the route goes through almost flat terrain to the next descent, which with
Route 3 leads down a wide forest way towards Mehring (1.2 km, ascent: 0 m, descent: 112 m) and with
Route 3+ on an old, steep winding trail as a single trail downhill (0.7 km, ascent: 2 m, descent: 114 m) to the edge of the forest above Mehring. After crossing the district road, the trail follows the path between forest and vines until the route closes after about a kilometer.
Safety Guidelines
Nature and mountain biking
It is the greatest happiness for mountain bikers to enjoy the charms of nature and landscape, the silence of the forests, and the diversity of open countryside far from the traffic noise of busy roads, even off heavily frequented bike paths.
The use of nature, whether as a lone touring cyclist or as a member of a training group, must be accompanied by the awareness that misbehavior can cause damage to forest and fields, flora and fauna.
Reasonable general behavior and a few basic rules ensure that mountain biking does not become a nuisance.
Equipment
A functional mountain bike and a bicycle helmet should of course be part of the standard equipment.
Tip
The mountain bike trail park in Mehring has offered a mega experience since 2013, making every mountain biker’s heart beat faster.
Parking
The parking lot at the Mehring sports facility has a large number of parking spaces.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25 000 Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route
ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
Schweich (Mosel). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route” the Eifel Association supplements its series of hiking maps at the Mosel with the fourth hiking map at a scale of
1 : 25 000. This series of hiking maps, which the Eifel Association publishes in cooperation with Moselland tourism and the tourist offices of the local municipalities, will complete the Eifel Association’s map series after completion of all MOSEL hiking maps with the Mosel route in the southeast.
The new hiking map replaces, with a slightly modified sheet cut, the previously outdated hiking map “Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Route” published by the State Office for Topography and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The hiker is reliably guided on hiking routes in the holiday region Schweich along Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side routes, and dream loops with the new map. The Meulenwald hiking area is also depicted on the map.
Two long-distance hiking trails awarded as “Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail”, the Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, run through the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route. Not only with the connected circular hiking routes named “side route” and “dream loop” does the holiday region Schweich form an extensive and diverse hiking network. This network is also supplemented by sections of the Eifelsteig with two partner routes, the Mosel Höhenweg, as well as other main hiking trails of the Eifel Association and numerous regional hiking paths, included on the new hiking map. Selected cycling routes as well as five mountain bike routes at the Roman Wine Route are also depicted on the map.
Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7, and 8 as well as the five side routes “Longuicher Sauerbrunnen”, “Zitronenkrämerkreuz”, “Mehringer Schweiz”, “Klüsserather Sagenweg” and “Moselachter” constitute the core of this new hiking map. In particular, these four Moselsteig stages and the five side routes are described bilingually in the inside of the hiking map, with elevation profiles that provide information about the difficulty level of the hikes.
Base for this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25 000 from the State Office for Topography and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs 7.90 EUR uniformly and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Route, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Moselland tourism, bookstores, and naturally also at the Eifel Association e.V., Stürtzstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. There the map can also be ordered online around the clock at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
