Historic architectural features and a unique wine-growing landscape in the Zellerland region.
The narrow bend in the Moselle, with the Petersberg hill in Neef rising above it, is one of the most scenic and impressive stretches along the Moselle. Numerous historical monuments, such as the Petersberg Chapel with its hilltop cemetery, the Eulenköpfchen, the Burgberg, the hilltop cross, Neefer Castle, and Stuben Monastery, bear witness to a long and eventful past. The historic Neefer Frauenberg vineyard, with its old vines and dry stone walls, vineyard terraces, and rocks, is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The climb through the vineyards is rewarded at the Höhenkreuz with a fantastic panoramic view of the entire Moselle loop. This wealth of historical structures and the unique wine-growing landscape are so impressive that they were designated a “Leuchtpunkt” (landmark) in 2019 by the “Lebendige Moselweinberge” initiative.
General information
Directions
Start: Brunnenplatz on the banks of the Moselle; continue along Fährstraße, past the square at the “Boar,” and over the railroad bridge to the “Rosenberg” and “Frauenberg” vineyards. Continue past the hilltop cross to the Petersberg Chapel and on to the former Roman hill fort Eulenköpfchen. Descend to the former Frankish settlement of Rumpenheim on Burgberg, then through the forest, past the parking lot on Petersberg to the panoramic viewpoint bench; continue through the Neefer Frauenberg and back down the steps through the village of Neef to the starting point at Brunnenplatz.

Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of drinking water and drink regularly. Especially during hikes and bike rides along the Moselle, the heat can be intense in the summer.

Check your body thoroughly after your trip and use a suitable insect repellent if necessary.
Oak processionary moth
Avoid contact with oak processionary moth caterpillars and their webs. The fine stinging hairs can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.
Check the Weather
Check the current weather forecast before starting your hike or bike ride. In case of thunderstorms, heavy rain, or strong winds, you should postpone the trip or end it in a timely manner.
Stay on the marked trails
Stay on the marked hiking and biking trails. This helps protect nature and yourself, and avoids unnecessary risks.
Forest Fire Risk
Pay special attention to the current risk of wildfires, especially during the summer months. Avoid open fires and smoking in the forest and in areas with dry vegetation.
Dogs
Please keep dogs on a leash whenever possible and be considerate of wildlife, grazing animals, and other visitors.

In an emergency, you can reach emergency services throughout Europe by dialing 112. Provide your location as precisely as possible and, if possible, use your cell phone’s location feature.
Equipment
Sturdy Footwear
Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear on hiking trails. Nature trails, slate paths, and steep vineyard trails can be slippery, especially after rain.
Headwear
Wear a hat in warm weather. There are very few shaded areas, especially on the open trails through the vineyards.
Sun protection
Apply plenty of sunscreen with an appropriate SPF and protect yourself from intense sunlight.
Tip
The Eulenköpfchen lookout point offers a magnificent view of the Moselle and Calmont across the river, Europe’s steepest vineyard.
