Orchid Paradise Wasserliesch

Those arriving by train will start this botanical hike at the train station. Everyone else starts at the nearby marketplace in Wasserliesch. At the station, go under the tracks and follow the street "Heidegarten" uphill until it transitions into the Station Path, accompanied by field crosses leading to the edge of the forest. Here the hiking trails diverge. The Station Path continues straight uphill, while the themed path first takes a detour to the grenade monument. Then slightly downhill, you hike through splendid mixed forest until a signpost points out the side path to the monument. Anyone wishing to go there, also for the view of the Moselle valley, must consider some altitude loss.

Back at the signpost, the route now begins to climb steeply again. Through dense forest, a forest road climbs steeply up to the plateau of the Liescher Berg. At the top, do not go straight but take a sharp right along the ridge to the Löscher Chapel. This is the ideal place to rest and watch the ships on the Moselle and let time pass by. You could sit here forever!

Walking between meadows and pine forest, it is not far to the orchid path in the nature reserve "Perfeist". An information board at the small hiking parking lot provides information about the orchid paradise, and signs clearly instruct to "stay on the path." This is important because nature here is extremely sensitive. A narrow meadow path winds as a circular route through the calcareous dry grassland area, one of the most important refuges of rare orchids in Germany. Small nameplates indicate which plants can be seen. 28 orchid species, from marsh orchids over heath spotted orchid, lousewort, pyramid orchid, tongue orchid to bird's nest orchid line the path and provide wonderful photo opportunities. The visual stars, however, are the magnificent Turk's cap lilies, which belong to the lily family. The yellow gentian is also not to be missed. The return route to Wasserliesch follows the paved driveway that leads straight downhill from the hiking parking lot. Views of beautiful scattered orchards, and occasionally the village of Igel, sweeten the descent.

Good to walk in sturdy sneakers. Bring provisions or stop in Wasserliesch.

Take binoculars, as some orchids do not stand directly on the path. Possibly carry a guidebook (e.g. "Orchids of Europe," Ulmer Verlag or Kosmos nature guide "What's blooming there?") or join a guided hike.

Wasserliesch is accessible via the B419.

We recommend the free parking lot behind the St. Aper Church (Hauptstr. 58-60, 54332 Wasserliesch). From there, the starting point at the marketplace is within a 2-minute walk. Another parking option is available at the marketplace (there are only a few spaces).

Additionally, via Löscherstraße you can reach the hiking parking lot on the Löscher Berg.

We recommend arriving by train. Wasserliesch can be reached via the Wittlich-Trier-Perl rail line. The starting point at the marketplace is located very close to the train station in Wasserliesch.
