An easy hiking route that leads high above Nittel through rapeseed and grain fields, offers wide views over the landscape, and leads to the orchid nature reserve.

The easy, somewhat different hike takes us across fields and meadows to the forest area "Lumbüsch" and later past the orchid nature reserve "Langheck", where many orchid species can be admired in spring. We reach the starting point at the sports field Nittel after our path through the higher vineyards in the district "Windhof".

General information

Directions

The N6 starts at the sports field in the Nittel district of Windhof and, after crossing the L135 country road, initially follows a slowly ascending track along a small copse and then for a long time between fields. It gives the hiker time to look around and enjoy the gentle hilly landscape with wide distant views. After about 1.5 km, the path turns right and follows the Moselsteig for a short distance. Just before the beginning (edge) of the Lumbüsch copse, the Moselsteig branches off to the left, while the N6 continues for a short distance along the forest edge before turning left into the forest at a track intersection. It goes through the copse for about 15 minutes, then turns right upon reaching the opposite forest edge and continues along the forest edge.

With good visibility, there is a view through the hills all the way as far as Trier. The path continues about 1.5 km southwest along the Lumbüsch until it crosses the L135 country road again. Before crossing the road, on the right side, there is an old wayside cross with the barely legible inscription: "Hiker, in all your ways remember the last things, so you will not sin forever."

Afterwards the path runs pleasantly along the copse and the Langheck nature reserve and repeatedly offers views of the Nittel district of Köllig and the Nittel Rochus Chapel. At the roadside, the first namesake orchids finally appear. The pretty bee orchid is found particularly frequently, as well as other orchid species such as marsh lousewort, pyramid orchid and frog orchid. An information board at the end of the beautiful meadow section provides some information about the nature reserve and the orchids encountered. At this point the view opens again towards Nittel and the Moselle.

The path continues to a huge, almost spherical cherry laurel bush. From here, the marked official route of the N6 continues between vineyards to the well-known country road and then left again back to the starting point at the sports field. A recommended alternative is to turn sharply left after the cherry laurel and then immediately right after about 100 m. The path soon leads to the beautifully situated Nittel panoramic hut. Here, with a magnificent wide view over Nittel and the Moselle valley, a last rest can be taken before following the path to the right and then at the next junction on the street "Windhof" going back to the parking lot.

The hike is consistently marked with the "N6" sign.
