General information

Directions

The tour starts in Saarburg and initially follows the idyllic course of the Leukbach towards Trassem-Perdenbach. From there, the route leads up a gravel forest path to the impressive cultural and rock plateau of Kastel-Staadt.

Once at the top, you cycle through the town and reach the cultural plateau – a historic place with a special atmosphere.

Here you will find exciting insights into the past: the Roman theatre, the war cemetery, and the Elisensitz. The Elisensitz was the favorite spot of Crown Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria, who was by the way the aunt and godmother of the famous Empress Sisi. She is the namesake of the viewing point.

Particularly impressive is the Klause State Monument with a unique view of the Saar valley. The Klause is a historic rock formation high above the Saar, whose origins date back to the time of the Crusades and was originally used by hermits. In the 19th century, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the complex rebuilt by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel into a romantic mausoleum for King Johann of Bohemia.

A new special feature now enriches the experience at the Klause: the so-called Jumpstone. The sturdy jumping cube playfully combines movement with knowledge transfer: jumping activates a listening station that operates independently without an external power source. Within a short time, this entertainingly prepared story about the history of the Klause unfolds.

Tip: Be sure to take part in the open guided tours at the Klause or the informative audio tour to experience the history of this unique place even more intensively.

Open guided tour through the Klause: from 01.04. to 31.10. on Wednesdays at 10:30 am, Thursdays at 2:30 pm, and Fridays at 10:30 am. Duration: approx. 75 minutes. Cost: €5/adult, children 6 - 16 years €2.50. Plus admission fees for the Klause. Booking at www.saar-obermosel.de/erlebnisse

Audio tour: Here is how it works: download the smartphone app „Lauschtour“ in the AppStore or GooglePlay, then select the audio tour „Cultural Plateau Kastel-Staadt“. At the start, the content is saved on your smartphone, so no internet connection is necessary on the go.

After the visit, you return down to the Saar valley to Staadt. From there, follow the Saar cycle path upstream to the Serrig dam.

Here you cross the Saar and cycle along the right bank, passing Serrig, relaxed back to Saarburg.
