Along the Flonterbach and the Ruwer, this themed circular route offers many interesting stories about the aquatic animals and plant species living here.
We start at the Schillingen recreational area for this 8.5 km hike, which leads us along the Flonterbach to the Ruwer. Through extensive removal of coniferous afforestation, sunny grassland fallow areas have been created in the riparian meadows, which again provide habitat to numerous, partly endangered, butterfly species. At several points, narrow pipes in the Ruwer and its tributaries have been replaced by wide culverts, allowing aquatic animals to migrate again and reach their preferred spawning grounds. In spring, wild daffodils bloom along the middle Ruwer, attracting admirers annually at the end of March/beginning of April during the Daffodil Festival.
General information

Sturdy footwear and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
Tip
The recreational area at Schillinger See offers plenty of leisure attractions and activities for both young and old.
Additional Information
The themed trail is funded as part of the Ruwer water project through the federal water fringe strip program with participation from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The goal is to preserve and develop the Ruwer and its tributaries with the riparian meadows over about 186 km of watercourse as a near-natural water and floodplain landscape in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park.
In total, 6 themed hiking trails (Rut1-Rut6) are part of this project, bringing the Ruwer and its use very close to the hiker in a very vivid and informative way.
