An exploratory route following the trail of the Whinchat in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Over 6.7 km, we enjoy wonderful views on our path through the Greimerather Mulde.
With some luck, on this 6.7 km hike around Greimerath, we can observe the Whinchat, which finds ideal breeding conditions in the wet meadows of the Panzbruch. In the open meadow landscapes, it hunts insects and builds its nest on or just above the ground, hidden among grasses and herbs – so careful observation can be rewarding!
As a migratory bird, it only stays in our region during the spring and summer months. However, year-round, you can watch the Taurus cattle grazing there, as they are used to keep the wet meadows open, thus providing ideal breeding and living conditions for meadow bird species otherwise threatened with extinction, such as the Whinchat, snipe, and meadow pipit.
General information
Directions
From the parking lot in Greimerath, the path continues along the church towards the outskirts. We cross the Eselsbach on the right and reach the first extensive wet and damp meadows. Every spring, the Whinchat returns here to breed. The Whinchat's territory is about 2.5 hectares, so roughly a dozen pairs occur in the Greimerath area.
Our path continues along the forest edge, and after about 4.3 km, we reach the information board. A little further on, we have a good view of the Panzbruch. At the lowest point of the Greimerather Mulde is this fen, which has been a nature reserve since 1983. The mosaic of sedge and fescue meadows, rush swamps, willow bushes, and wet forests is to be preserved. On the way back towards Greimerath, we can watch the Taurus cattle grazing and return to our starting point.
Equipment
Sturdy footwear, comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing is recommended.
Tip
The Whinchat is only as big as a sparrow, but it is a migratory bird. Therefore, it only stays with us in spring and summer!

Additional Information
The themed trail is funded as part of the Ruwer Water Project through the federal water strip program with participation from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The aim is to preserve and develop the Ruwer and its tributaries with their floodplains as a near-natural water and floodplain landscape on about 186 km of watercourse in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park.
In total, there are 6 themed hiking trails (Rut1-Rut6) included in this project, bringing the Ruwer and its use very vividly and informatively closer to hikers.
