Shadow play in the green gallery by the stream - on the hike in the Ruwer valley & over the heights of the Hochwald, you experience the entire natural spatial diversity of this region.

Diverse natural landscapes over 5 km - lined by an alder gallery, the Ruwer winds as a green ribbon through the valley meadows, the Alkenbach flows in the steep gorge valley and on the flower-rich heights, you can enjoy the wide view of the Hunsrück plateau.

From the forested valley floor of the Ruwer, it goes up to the flower-rich heights at Ollmuth, which are still predominantly used for intensive agriculture. Thanks to the extensive management of many parcels, however, there are many flower-rich meadows as well as fruit orchards that provide numerous bird species, small mammals, and insects with varied food, shelter, and nesting opportunities.

General information

Directions

From the starting point, we hike along the Waschbach down to the Ruwer. Some measures have been taken here in water protection: The passage under the street was rebuilt and the riverbed raised, so that aquatic organisms can now migrate freely between Ruwer and Geizenburger Waschbach.

Now lined with alders, the Ruwer flows as a green ribbon through the valley meadows; with some luck, we discover the dipper, which likes to build its nest here. We reach the Hinzenburg mill and then enter the gorge valley of the Alkenbach. Where the valley slopes are too steep for meadows, beech and oak trees grow. The gently sloping spring hollow of the Alkenbach is occupied by pastures. Arriving at the flower-rich heights, you have a wide view over the Hunsrück plateau, which is segmented by the Ruwer and its steeply incised tributaries. Shortly before the village, you recognize it: the belt of orchards that used to surround every village. These scattered fruit orchards not only provide people with healthy fruit but also offer numerous bird species, small mammals, and insects varied food, shelter, and nesting opportunities.

Additional Information

The themed trail is supported within the framework of the Ruwer water project via the federal water edge strip program with participation of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The goal is to preserve and develop the Ruwer and its tributaries with the stream floodplains over about 186 km of watercourse as a near-natural water and floodplain landscape in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park.

Overall, 6 themed hiking trails (Rut1-Rut6) belong to this project, bringing the hiker very closely and informatively to the Ruwer and its use.
