The Saar-Hunsrück Climb between Sohren (North), Hahn and Altlay is easy to walk due to its length and few inclines.

After crossing the B 50, the stage leads to a great vantage point with a view of the Idarkopf and the surrounding area. Passing an old Jewish cemetery, the route leads through forest to the geographical center of Rhineland-Palatinate with opportunities to rest.
After a beautiful forest passage, we cross the L 193. On the other side, the path leads us to a plateau, which offers an outstanding panoramic view over the entire Hunsrück as far as the Moselle valley.
At another vantage point, we catch sight of the Hahn airport runway and, with a bit of luck, can see planes landing right in front of us.
The path then dips down into a quiet, rustic stream valley with beautiful woodland. After a short climb, we reach our destination of Altlay.

General information

Safety Guidelines

Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are essential prerequisites for tackling this premium long-distance hiking trail.

Equipment

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a near-natural trail, 65% of which is over soft forest soil, grass paths or along streams. However, this special quality can also lead to problems after long periods of rain and make parts of the trail difficult to walk on. Sturdy footwear is therefore highly recommended.
