An interesting circular route with a distinctive elevation profile. The hike takes place mostly on forest paths but also along two streams.

The hike starts in the wine village of Veldenz, which lies in a beautiful side valley of the Mosel.

The circular hike leads through part of the former County of Veldenz. Originally, the county included the municipalities Veldenz, Andel, Brauneberg, Burgen, Gornhausen, and Mülheim.

The namesake of this premium hiking trail is the most famous descendant of the Veldenz counts, who in 1563 married a daughter of King Gustav I of Sweden. The genealogical history of the counts of Veldenz is very interesting, as they were also related to the famous Wittelsbach nobility. Their history is thematized on this approximately 14 km long side route. The seat of the former counts, Veldenz Castle, can be admired from many viewpoints. The start and end point of the route is the romantic village of Veldenz. The hiking trail winds along the slopes of the Veldenzbach or Hinterbach.

Along the way, there are dining options and beautiful places to rest.

General information

Directions

In the former county of Veldenz and in one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Mosel, a premium experience awaits you. The Graf Georg Johannes Path is about 14 kilometers long - named after the most famous scion of the Veldenz count lineage.
Start and finish is the Villa Romana in the village center of Veldenz. At first, the path winds along a mountainside of the Veldenzbach or Hinterbach. Time and again, you can admire the view of the former counts' seat, Veldenz Castle with its ruins. Then the stream is crossed three times on the valley floor. At the Thielenmühle you ascend to the "Heidenmauer", an approximately 90-meter-long stone wall - evidence of a former Celtic refuge castle. On the mountain spur, you continue to the chapel of Thalveldenz and the ascent to the castle.
Veldenz Castle was originally a fief of the Prince-Bishopric of Verdun. The ancestors of the later counts can be traced back to the 11th century. Since 1107, the counts resided in the castle, which King Louis XIV of France had demolished in 1681. Today it is privately owned and only opens its doors on special occasions.
The trail then leads you to the Rittersturz, a rock outcrop where, according to legend, the devil supposedly fell down with a knight. Then follows the last climb to the Pioneer Rock and the Josephinenhöhe. The Veldenz local mountain is named after Empress Josephine Beauharnais, the first wife of Napoleon, as a reminiscence of the time when the County of Veldenz belonged to France (1794 to 1815). From here you can enjoy a fantastic view. In addition, a special highlight awaits you at the end - a small wine cabinet. This makes enjoying the view even more special.
