  • 60 / 100

Short but quite challenging route: first on narrow paths through a steep stream valley, then also on wide, open field paths; the return goes downhill again through the forest.

The Moselsteig side route goes up and down: into the Hunsrück and back to the Mosel! Manageable - even though the start of the tour through the Kallenfelstal is steep and "has it in itself."

Insights into the hike:

Named after the city’s coat of arms, the bear, this attractive Moselsteig side route rises above the old town’s rooftops and returns in a roughly 6.5 km loop back to Bernkastel-Kues. Hikers are offered great views of the Mosel town and Landshut Castle. Mostly on narrow, natural paths, you ascend through the shady Kallenfels stream valley to an elevation of around 400 meters above sea level. Passing an old burial mound, from a wide meadow area, there are distant views of the Hunsrück and Eifel mountain ranges to admire.

There are no catering options en route: so bring packed food. At the start or end of the tour, there are numerous hiker-friendly dining options in Bernkastel-Kues.

General information

Directions

The best place to start the Moselsteig side route is at the Tourist Information (Mosel Guest Center) in the Bernkastel district. From here, a "Zuweg" signposted path leads through the old town to the actual starting point near the "Märchenhotel" at the "Doppelkreuz" (corner of Burgstraße/Hinterm Graben).
The path then ascends into Kallenfelsstraße (it is recommended to walk this route clockwise). From now on, you steadily go uphill, first on cobblestones, then on a narrow path. The Kallenfelsbach babbles in its streambed and is a constant companion, sometimes directly by the path, sometimes below it. Up to the wooden bridge over the stream, you also walk along the "Moselsteig." Then, at the crossroads, follow the forest path, which continues further uphill along the stream (the side routes "Moseltalschanzen" and "Bernkasteler Bärensteig" are also marked on the following section). Soon the path opens up, and gardens of the nearby "Königsfarm" can be seen from a sensory bench. The path continues uphill to the new B 50. Watch out! Here, the Moselsteig side routes split again! The "Bernkasteler Bärensteig" almost turns at a right angle and leads along the edge of a meadow to a reforestation area. The path winds through young trees. A slight hill in this woodland, hardly noticeable, marks the Hunnengrab announced shortly before on the signpost. Passing a wildlife bridge, follow the markings to the extensive open meadow area, which is also the highest point of the hike. After crossing this area, continue along the forest edge towards "Bresgenruh," the first viewpoint at the edge of the Tiefenbachtal. From here, the descent back to Bernkastel begins. Along the way, from rock ledges ("Goldenes Kreuz" and "Jodlerplatz"), there are wonderful views of the town, the Mosel valley, and Landshut Castle! At the cemetery by the hairpin bend, follow the cemetery wall. Almost at the foot of the descending stairs, sharply turn right onto a narrow path. Shortly after, there is a handrail and the path climbs a few meters again. Above the rooftops of the old town, the last stage of the side route follows, with some vines along the path. Finally, stairs lead down to Kallenfelsstraße and back to the starting point.
