Ideal for mountain bikes or e-bikes: the 23-kilometer route runs from the Sternfeld barbecue hut over the Hohe Wurzel toward Hinzert and Reinsfeld and back again.
This suggested hike takes you right through the heart of the Osburg High Forest. The starting and ending point is the barbecue hut at Sternfeld near Farschweiler. Nearby are the “Römer-Keltenweg” scenic loop and the “Walddistelpfad” themed nature trail. After the climb up the Hohe Wurzel, we reach the forest near Hinzert, where sites of inhumanity near the SS Special Camp/Hinzert Concentration Camp Memorial have been marked with information panels, among other things. The trail then leads to the memorial itself, which can be visited free of charge during opening hours. Between Hinzert and Reinsfeld, the tour follows the connecting bike path to the Ruwer-Hochwald Bike Trail. In Reinsfeld, the route heads back into the forest and follows the “Marked Tree”—the boundary between the municipalities of Osburg and Reinsfeld—as well as the Altweiher, Pionierweiher, and Misselbach streams, back to Farschweiler.
General information
Directions
From Farschweiler, the route follows the old Roman road to the “3 Marken” intersection at the 2.6 km mark. Here, the trail continues straight ahead on the SU2 hiking trail (Sites of Inhumanity 2) through the Osburg State Forest. After 3.9 km, we turn right and continue on the SU2 to the SS Special Camp / Hinzert Concentration Camp Memorial. We take the access bike path to the Ruwer-Hochwald Bike Path and then on to the center of Reinsfeld. We leave the town heading north toward the sports complex, join the GR (Großer Rundweg) hiking trail, and arrive at the “Marked Tree” at km 15.8, which marks the municipal boundary between Reinsfeld and Osburg. From there, we continue on the OS1 along the Altweiher until km 17.6. Here, we turn right onto the RuT5 and continue along this path, passing the Pionierweiher, until we reach the Sternfeld Forest House. After crossing the state highway, we reach the starting point at the barbecue hut in Farschweiler.
