Witnesses of the Roman past are two Roman burial chambers situated high in the vineyards, whose vaulted paintings are the best preserved north of the Alps. From the village, the Roman graves can be reached with a short walk along the Roman Grave Cultural Trail. They are part of the "Road of the Romans" project, which links Roman cultural monuments throughout the region.
The starting point for this wonderful hike is the village square at the Nehren community and fire station. Here begins the "Roman Grave Cultural Trail," offering a historical highlight right at the starting point with a Roman pressing stone from the 3rd century AD.
We initially follow Kirchstraße for a short distance towards Ediger-Eller, then turn right into Römerstraße, which leads us uphill into the vineyards. A farm road leads us past a large boulder, a small shrine, and an experimental vineyard with various grape varieties, through the Nehren Römerberg vineyard area to the Roman graves situated high above the village of Nehren. The tomb structures date from the second half of the 4th century AD and were rebuilt in 1974 on their original foundations. The burial chamber of the first tomb is the only ancient room still existing in the Rhineland where the original paintings on the walls and vault are largely preserved. It is the family crypt of a landowner family whose residence is sought in the extensive rubble field repeatedly excavated on the terrace immediately north above the village of Nehren. The graves were extensively restored between 2002 and 2005. From here you have a magnificent view of the Moselle valley. We descend the stairs at the Roman graves and hike right towards Ediger-Eller. Here we enter a wooded area and follow the path to the Lehmer Bachtal. We walk downhill along the stream almost to the federal road and the so-called "Lehmer Tower." Above the tower, we hike left through the vineyards back to the starting point in Nehren.
