The Route
The Viezstraße is continuously signposted and is ideal for a varied car drive or a winding motorcycle ride. Many sights along the route invite you to make a stop. The Roman buildings of Trier, the open-air museum Roscheider Hof in Konz, the Roman temple complex in Tawern, the Roman Villa Borg, the view of the Saar Loop with the spectacular treetop path, the sculptures of the sculptor symposium "Stones on the Border", the farmhouse museum Haus Saargau, the Siersburg high above the Saar, the wolf park Werner Freund, and the Garden of the Senses in Merzig are just some of the highlights directly on the Viezstraße. All embedded in the scenic landscape of the Saargau.
The Product
Viez is a tart, fresh drink fermented from the small-statured apples of the orchards. Traditionally, Viez is fully fermented with an alcohol content of about 5 to 7 percent. It is consumed pure or as a spritzer. Increasingly, Viez specialties with more residual sugar are being produced, such as the aromatic Eisleseviez. These high-quality products are enjoyed naturally undiluted. The name "Viez" recalls its former significance as the most important alcoholic drink for the rural population of the Saargau. They drank the apple wine "vice vinum", i.e., instead of the expensive grape wine. Viez was mostly produced by themselves.
The Landscape
The landscape of the Viezstraße is the Saargau. It is an old cultural landscape already settled in Celtic times at the border with France. The Saargau occupies the ridge between the Saar and Mosel rivers, from Merzig in the south to the confluence of the Saar and Mosel near the gates of Trier in the north. Characteristic of the Saargau are the diverse orchards. With their high-stemmed apple and pear trees, they traditionally form rings around the small villages. They still provide protection from wind and weather today and give the landscape a park-like character. Many regional fruit varieties, especially those suitable for producing juice and Viez, now grow only in the orchards. These are also ecologically valuable habitats for rare animals and plants.
