General information

Directions

From the starting point at the Old Town Hall in Rhens, go through the Viehtor of the medieval city wall via an ascending path to the Rhine plateau. Here, a short detour to the Königsstuhl, a monument made of basalt stones where the kings of the Middle Ages swore their oath of allegiance, is worthwhile. A magnificent panoramic view of the Rhine from Marksburg to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress invites you to linger. Over a meadow path and tight switchbacks, you ascend to the viewpoint "Lützelforst".
Passing the Jewish cemetery, the path leads relaxedly through an open orchard landscape to the St. Antonius holy little house. From here, the path rises through a mixed forest to the next hill and then winds downhill into the Upper Mühlental. After a short steep ascent, the Rhine height Kriesenkopf is reached. The spectacular view of the Hunsrück and Taunus makes up for the effort. Now it goes downhill through the forest to the hollow path "Wolfsdelle", which is lined with old gnarled trees, and further into the lower Mühlental. The Nikolaus chapel by the roadside reminds of an old fishing settlement. Along a narrow path along the mill creek, it goes back to the starting point.

Safety Guidelines

Safety instructions - safe hiking on the Traumpfade

Hikers want narrow paths, natural routes (over forest floor, grass paths or along streams) and rocky ascents that lead to spectacular views. It goes without saying that such paths must be walked with special care.

What you should consider on your hike:

  • Wear weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun.
  • Plan your hike with appropriate breaks and use your strength sparingly.
  • Take enough fluids with you. There are not always refreshment possibilities available.
  • Please wear hiking shoes suitable for the Traumpfade, which give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you consider certain sections of paths impassable, you should bypass or turn back. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections.
  • Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path.
  • You must expect such path impairments during a hike.
  • Inform yourself on the internet before your hike at https://www.traumpfade.info/traumpfade/wege-status/ whether the Traumpfad you want to hike is possibly closed, if detours are in place, whether path construction work is planned, or for instance, logging or other disturbances exist.
  • Recommended hiking months: April to October.

Difficulty rating

Easy routes

...only have slight altitude differences and the distances can usually be managed in half a day. They do not place special demands on fitness and sure-footedness. There are no sections requiring a head for heights. Shorter steeper parts are possible. Depending on the path format, some sections can be difficult to walk on when wet.

Medium routes

...can be managed well with normal fitness. Path sections may require good sure-footedness, so sturdy footwear is important, walking poles can be useful. Some longer and steeper ascents and descents are possible. Difficult (partly secured) passages are very rare and can usually be avoided by detours. Natural sections can be difficult to pass when wet.

Difficult routes

...require very good fitness and stamina due to length and/or altitude to be mastered. Also, very good sure-footedness is necessary to manage steep ascents and descents on partly demanding paths. Secured rope sections and/or simple climbing passages requiring a minimum head for heights are possible. Sturdy footwear and hiking poles are important. Paths and exposed sections are often only difficult or not passable at all in wet or winter weather.

Equipment

Sturdy footwear is recommended for the route!
