In the Pluwig district of Geizenburg, there has been a statue of Saint Walburga— the namesake of this hiking route— on a steep rock outcrop above the Pluwig Hammer since 1846.
Saint Walburga is a Catholic folk saint who lived in the 8th century and was associated with many miracles. A statue in her honor was erected here in the upper Ruwer valley near Geizenburg in the 19th century. The approximately 9 km long hiking route passes this spot, from where you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the Ruwer valley.
But beware! We ask you to be careful here: the rock outcrop is NOT secured by a railing. Enter this spot at your own risk.
Otherwise, the path offers a varied landscape along the Ruwer and over the heights with views of the neighboring communities.
General information
Directions
We recommend the sports field in Pluwig as a starting point for our hike, where you will find ample free parking. From here, you can also start any other route around Pluwig.
Passing the local dog school/dog boarding house, the path initially leads us into the valley towards the Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path. We follow the cycle path for a short distance until we then take a parallel path along the Ruwer, where the first resting benches invite us to linger by the romantic river.
Here we also encounter the Romika dream loop, which will accompany us for a while. Later we switch to the other side of the cycle path, taking a path between the forest edge and the Ruwer, away from the busy activity of the "tired" athletes.
Back on the cycle path, we immediately cross the main road to begin our ascent towards Pluwig. Before the Romika dream loop leaves us again, a large resting bench here invites us to enjoy a beautiful view of the meadows and pastures and the neighboring village of Gusterath.
Returning to Pluwig, we move along the outer edge of the village center. Here, the three Pluwig hiking routes meet and accompany each other for a time. At the edge of the village, we begin our climb to the heights through the new development area. After saying goodbye to the panorama path and reaching the highest point of the new development, a beautiful forest path towards Geizenburg invites us to visit Walburga. Along the way, we leave the Karl-May hiking route again and reach a junction where we can make a detour to the statue of the namesake of our hiking route.
After our small detour, we quickly reach the main road and the Geizenburg district, which we walk through. At the upper end of the village, a view opens at the edge of a weekend area onto the neighboring communities of Schöndorf, Hinzenburg, and Ollmuth, and at the end, our final ascent to the heights above Pluwig. There we overlook the communities on the opposite side: Hockweiler, Gusterath, and Lonzenburg. Soon our hike will end, and we pass by cow and horse pastures to return to the town center. The return path to the parking lot now takes us over the church square and past the multigenerational square.
