The Wehlener meadow orchards are, like the famous Wehlener vineyards on the opposite Moselle bank, a historically shaped and maintained cultural landscape.
Experience and discover the nature reserve meadow orchards in Wehlen! Meadows, pastures, fruit trees, and shrubs form an interesting landscape mosaic: small-scale and yet extensive.
Along the route, stone sculptures and glass art paths by artists Heidemarie and Mic Leder provide information about the flora and fauna of the meadow orchard.
Insights into the hiking route:
The circular path "Wehlener ObstArt" aims to point out the beauty of the landscape. It invites visitors to observe and get to know nature, animals, and plants. The special feature: instead of information boards, objects and sculptures made of painted glass, stone, and metal stand along the route. The 11 installations and themes pick up forms from the meadow orchards, e.g., the pillar shape of tree trunks and the round shape of fruits. Some usual size ratios are altered to offer new perspectives to the viewer.
General information
Directions
The Wehlener ObstArt route begins in the center of the Wehlen district, near the Owl Fountain and the Catholic church, at the information board at the Kaspari house. Leaving the Mosel bridge behind, you walk along the original main street of Wehlen, which has become quieter due to the new local surroundings. At the end of this street, you turn either into Thelengraben street or Feldstraße. Both paths end over the new bypass road on a bridge that crosses the new route. With a right-left curve, you follow Thelengraben street and leave the wine village of Wehlen towards forests and meadows at the Thelengraben information board. The path then leads to the next left curve at the so-called Seasons Circle and turns into another path surrounded by meadow orchards and forests. The Seasons Circle consists of four nearly man-high glass panels vertically embedded in the ground. The panels are painted with colors, color gradients, and intensities typical for the four seasons. The lower, transparent areas allow a view into the surrounding landscape. Stand in the slightly recessed center of the circle and let the colors affect you — the colors of the glass panels and those of the landscape. Above the village of Wehlen, along various meadows and with constant views of the Moselle village and the vineyards opposite, the path continues on a forest path. Here you pass six more stations of the ObstArt route. From blossom to fruit, honey bees, landmarks, as well as the care of diversity, are just some of the themes at these stations. At the next left curve, the massive sculpture of an apple dominates. At the blossom base, there is a bronze cover with four movable segments, beneath which the core of the fruit becomes visible. Shortly before crossing the bridge over the federal road again, Station 13 becomes visible. The theme of this station is recognizing fruit trees based on various factors. In the nature reserve "Meadow Orchards near Wehlen," there are many different types of fruit. For example, cherry trees are best recognized by their horizontally ringed bark; plum trees by their steeply upward-pointing branches. The crown shape of most apple trees is round like an apple — for most pear trees, it is elongated like an upright pear.
Once again, you cross the bridge over the federal road and walk back through Thelengraben or Feldstraße to the village center. If you still have time, you should take a detour to the Moselle riverbank. Stylistic half-timbered houses, views of well-known vineyards and sundials, as well as sociable benches for resting, invite you there.
