This hiking trail starts and ends in the well-known pilgrimage town of Klausen in the beautiful Mosel-Eifel region. Along the route, numerous panoramic views of the region await you.
Klausen is a much-visited pilgrimage site. Not only pilgrims reach Klausen on foot via the Eifel or the Mosel-Camino. Since 1997, the motorcycle pilgrimage annually attracts bikers to start the motorbike season; since 2014, tractors also come to Klausen and their owners have their vehicles blessed for a safe journey. Many visitors also come on foot from the nearby Mosel valley, carrying wine and embarking on their personal pilgrimage. Hence the name: the Wine Pilgrimage Route connects the pilgrimage site Klausen with the Mosel wine villages of Piesport and Osann-Monzel. Some sections run along the Mosel-Camino and old pilgrim paths.
Insights into the hiking tour:
Due to the special route, the hike along meadows, forests, and vineyards offers wonderful views of the Eifel, the Hunsrück, and the Mosel valley. Nice places to stop for refreshments are available in the wine village Osann-Monzel, and great rest and panoramic points await at many spots along the route.
General information
Directions
The centrally located village store with the pilgrim hostel "Eberhardsklause" serves as the starting point for the hike. Here you can also stock up on provisions. First, you hike across a meadow area into the district of Krames. Passing the village fountain, you soon leave the "Mosel-Camino" and hike along the forest edge and Kramesbach steadily upstream. At a junction, you follow a steep forest path. The path is marked with the "Wine Pilgrimage Heart Logo Sign" and the "Moselsteig Access Sign". The forest path continues to lead you uphill. Finally, you reach a clearing, which you follow along the forest edge. On meadow paths through an area with old orchard trees, you come to a paved farm road. You keep left and follow the paved road to state road L50, cross it, and continue past the Piesport little shrine. The "Moselhöhenweg" is now additionally marked at the roadside (exists only on the Eifel side). The path continues to climb steadily. To the right of the path, the valley edge is wooded. A short detour through the narrow protective forest leads you to a spot with a great view of the Mosel curve near Piesport. Also, to the left of the path, you can shortly thereafter look towards Klausen and into the Eifel. A little further, at the Minheim shelter, there is also a 180-degree panoramic view of the Hunsrück heights at a junction. Shortly after the shelter, a longer passage through the forest follows. After a rest area, you stay level for a short time, then follow an old cattle drive above an abandoned quarry. This narrow path leads downhill over tree roots and crosses a forest road. Then it goes over an orchard meadow into the vineyards, where a beautiful view of the Mosel valley opens up. The path leads down through the vineyards to the outskirts of Monzel. After a short detour to a resting island, located slightly above the Monzel village church "Saint Nicholas," you enter Monzel, part of the village and wine-growing community of Osann-Monzel. There is an opportunity to stop for refreshments there. You leave Monzel again via "Hüttenkopfstraße" and "Brunnenstraße." Continuing along the wooded foothills of the Monzel Hüttenkopf, which at 423.4 m above sea level is the second highest Mosel hill. First still at the forest edge, then deep into the forest. Coniferous trees and mixed forest alternate over a length of about five kilometers, hiking is done on forest paths. It is only at "Heukehr", located above the small settlement of Neu-Minheim, that you encounter open meadowland again. Now it's not far to the starting point of the hike. From Neu-Minheim, you can already see the tower of the Klausen pilgrimage church "Maria Heimsuchung." Your visit crowns the end of the approximately 20-kilometer-long hike.
