This hiking route starts and ends in the well-known pilgrimage site Klausen in the beautiful Mosel-Eifel region. Along the route, numerous panoramic views of the region await you.
Klausen is a much-visited pilgrimage site. Not only pilgrims find their way on foot to Klausen via the Eifel or Mosel-Camino. Since 1997, the motorcycle pilgrimage annually attracts bikers to start the motorcycle season, and since 2014 tractors have been driving to Klausen, with their owners having their vehicles blessed for a safe journey at all times. Many visitors also come hiking from the nearby Mosel valley, carrying wine with them and undertaking their personal pilgrimage. Hence the name: the Wine Pilgrimage Trail connects the pilgrimage site Klausen with the Mosel wine towns of Piesport and Osann-Monzel. Some sections follow the Mosel-Camino and old pilgrimage trails.
Insights into the hiking route:
Due to its special route, the hike along meadows, forests, and vineyards offers magnificent views of the Eifel, the Hunsrück, and the Mosel valley. Nice places to stop are in the wine town Osann-Monzel, and great rest and viewing points can be found at many points along the route.
General information
Directions
The centrally located village shop with the pilgrim hostel "Eberhardsklause" is a good starting point for the hike. Here you can also stock up on provisions. Initially, you hike across meadowland into the district of Krames. Passing the village fountain, you soon leave the "Mosel-Camino" and hike along the forest edge and Kramesbach steadily upstream. At a fork, you follow a steep forest path. The path is marked with the "Wine Pilgrimage Heart Logo Sign" and the "Moselsteig Access Sign." The forest path leads you upwards continuously. Eventually, you reach a clearing, which you follow along the forest edge. On meadow paths through an area with old orchard trees, you come to a paved service road. Keep left and follow the tarred road to the state road L50, cross it, and continue past the Piesporter shrine. Additionally, the "Mosel Höhenweg" (only existing on the Eifel side) is now marked along the path. The path continues to climb gently. To the right of the path, the valley edge is forested. A short detour through the narrow protective forest leads to a spot offering a great view of the Mosel bend near Piesport. Shortly thereafter, to the left of the path, you can briefly look towards Klausen and the Eifel. A little further, at the Minheimer shelter, there is also a 180-degree panoramic view of the Hunsrück heights at a junction. Shortly after the shelter, a longer stretch through the forest follows. After a rest area, you stay level briefly, then follow an old cattle trail above an abandoned quarry. This narrow path leads downhill over tree roots and crosses a forest road. Then it goes over an orchard meadow into the vineyards, where a beautiful view of the Mosel valley opens up. The path descends through the vineyards to the outskirts of Monzel. After a small detour to a rest area located slightly above the Monzel village church "Saint Nicholas," you enter Monzel, part of the village and wine-growing community Osann-Monzel. There is an opportunity to stop in for refreshments. You leave Monzel again via "Hüttenkopfstraße" and "Brunnenstraße." The route continues along the forested foothills of Monzeler Hüttenkopf, which at 423.4 m above sea level is the second highest Mosel mountain. First still along the forest edge, then deep into the forest. Conifers and mixed forest alternate over a distance of about five kilometers, and you hike on forest paths. Only at "Heukehr," located above the small settlement of Neu-Minheim, do you return to open meadowland. Now it is not far to the starting point of the hike. From Neu-Minheim, you can already see the tower of the Klausen pilgrimage church "Maria Heimsuchung." Your visit crowns the end of the approximately 20-kilometer-long hike.
