Comfortably between meadows and fields - the gently rolling landscape of the Wittlicher Senke attracts cyclists with wide views.
From Schweich to Wittlich, the geological formation of the Trier Depression continues with a ridge running northeast parallel to the Moselle. The Wittlicher Senke bike path runs through the middle on dedicated paths with beautiful views. It is not completely flat because it must first cross the watershed between the Moselle and the Salm. Then it continues in the Salm valley before turning towards Wittlich.
The bike path is an attractive connection through the Wittlicher region between the Maare-Mosel bike path from Wittlich to the Moselle bike path to Trier. Over about 30 km, you cycle the gently rolling landscape of the Wittlicher Senke. The Wittlicher Senke is the northeastern continuation of the Trier Valley, bordered northwest by the Meulenwald and southeast by the Moselle hills. Due to this sheltered location, tobacco is even grown here. The bike path takes you past small towns like Hetzerath, Esch, Salmtal, and Dreis, until you finally reach the town of Wittlich. From Esch to Dreis, the route is the same as the Salm bike path.
The bike path is passable in both directions.
Points of interest along the route:
- Wittlich: historic market square, small tower, St. Markus parish church, synagogue
- Dreis: Baroque church of St. Martin
- Salmtal: Salm mill, Dörbach district
- Sehlem: village square, parish church, old school
- Esch: church, mill, village square
- Hetzerath: church and rectory, wine museum
- Schweich: synagogue, St. Martin church, Stefan-Andres fountain
