A circular hiking route with interesting information boards about the Osburg Forest, its history & its function as a habitat, including a large population of wood ants.

The marked circular route of 11 km leads from the hiking car park near the Osburg sports ground down into the valley, where Misselbach & Eschbach meet and continue as the Riveris flowing into the reservoir. Along the way, information boards tell anecdotes from the history of the Osburg forest & provide information about its function as a habitat for wood ants. You might perceive some things in the forest differently on your next round with this background information!

Along the Riveris reservoir, the drinking water reservoir of the city of Trier and a recreational destination for many hikers, joggers and cyclists, the information boards of the Trier utilities also provide interesting insights into the function of a reservoir.

General information

Directions

We leave the hiking car park in Osburg and follow the OS2 signs. The route is signposted in both directions. Choosing the route through the Misselbach valley, we walk southeast through the Osburg Forest and reach the information point "Gemeindewald Osburg". From here the path continues to the next information stop at the former nursery garden and then to the junction where we turn towards Misselbach valley. Downhill, the path continues to the "Millionenkehr", where tables and benches invite you to take a break. After about 3.4 km, we reach the Misselbach valley and the path now leads us along the Riveris to the reservoir. On this section of the path, we pass large wood ant colonies. Many ant nests can be discovered along the way & an information board provides interesting insights into this topic.

Along the reservoir, the route continues to the Thielenbach inflow. Here we turn back towards Osburg and follow the Thielenbach steadily uphill until we meet the access path to the hiking car park below the sports ground in Osburg.
