- Winningen
The vineyard terraces around Winningen are unique. Their dry stone walls represent a special landscape architecture. Like swallows' nests, the "Chüere" (= choir in the sense of gallery) cling to the steep slope. The countless walls with their striking arches in the vineyards of Uhlen, Hamm, Brückstück and Röttgen rise about 150 meters above the Moselle and are optimally aligned to the sun in a southeast to southwest direction. The vineyard terraces around Winningen are the most extensive in the entire Moselle region. Up to 29 superimposed terraces and many kilometers of dry stone walls run through the vineyards of Uhlen, Hamm, Röttgen and Brückstück. The 130 span arches and the 600 scissor stairs embedded in the walls are impressive. In addition to their cultural and historical significance, the Moselle slopes also provide a habitat for such special and rare animal species as the Apollo butterfly and the eagle owl.
Note: With the initiative "Living Moselle Vineyards", the Service Center Rural Moselle promotes biodiversity in the vineyards in the Moselle growing region. For this purpose, so-called lighthouses are awarded.
