It was supposed to become a dwelling for eternity: the so-called "Widdertshäuschen" is a very unusual Roman burial place, made from a large, heavy sandstone block. It was hollowed out on the inside for the mortal remains. A massive lid which looks like the roof of a house was then placed on it. Nevertheless, its weight was of no use to the three buried there: grave robbers left no more of them than an inscription. It is possible that the house where the dead had lived stood nearby, at least the remains of Roman walls have been found. From there they could certainly look up to a huge Roman temple precinct located on a hilltop opposite, where the remains of the large cult theatre on the edge of the slope can still be seen. From Serrig, however, the hermitage at Kastel is worth a visit. It was built according to plans by the famous Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. And there is more. You should definitely visit the heritage zone at Kastel-Staadt!
