Alte Mühle Thomas Höreth, Kobern-Gondorf

Culinary experiences in a romantically rustic environment

“It was 1975 when a young Thomas Höreth wondered through the Mühlental Valley in Kobern and became aware of an old, dilapidated mill. It was a Sunday morning, and assuming all decent people would be in church, he dared to open the squeaky, slightly ajar iron gate further to get a view of the courtyard…”

What he discovered there wasn't all that pleasant – read the establishment’s website for further details if you want to know more.

However, the professional winemaker was so enchanted by the charm of the property, that he fell in love with the 11th century historic mill and, after tough negotiations and discussions, it became his in 1979.

Thomas Höreth and his wife Gudrun then invested a lot of time and energy in the reconstruction of the approximately 1,000-year-old, dilapidated mill, in order to awaken it from its Sleeping Beauty slumber; day by day, year by year, one small step at a time.

Step into a fairytale world

The result is a striking venue, where romance and rural idyll reign. With its great attention to detail and style, and a totally unique, enchanting atmosphere, this location is the perfect place to unwind. Today, as in the past, several cosy parlours with tucked-away corners, invite you stay and enjoy yourself. Every room and table is lovingly decorated and the menu is handwritten. In the warmer months, tables and chairs are set out in the age-old courtyard and in the mill's garden under the flowering oleander.

Quality-conscious regional cuisine

A passion for food – this defines the restaurant. But also its fresh Mosel cuisine; culinary classics and game dishes from the surrounding area. As well as this, a special three-course menu is available daily. And of course, numerous excellent wines from the in-house cellar are also served.

Falstaff's Restaurant Guide 2019 says of the Alte Mühle Thomas Höreth, “In a side valley of the Mosel lies the Alte Mühle, a gem of cosiness and known for its wholesome hearty cuisine. It offers a wide variety of menu options and vegetarians are also catered for with tastily prepared dishes. A good selection of wines.”

For those wishing to stay a little longer in this special place, there are numerous options: overnight accommodation in the old forest mill with its lovingly, individually designed guest rooms, in one of the apartments or in the charming yellow villager's cottage.

The Alte Mühle, Thomas Höreth – a unique place to eat, drink and sleep – and by no means a hidden gem any longer!
