The Matthias Dostert winery in Nittel can look back on hundreds of years of family tradition. Delicious products are created here with passion, skill and imagination: from typical regional Elbling wines and rich Burgundies to delightful sparkling wines and house-distilled spirits.

But what’s a good drop without the right bite to eat? Anita and Matthias Dostert asked themselves the same question and started offering their guests small dishes to accompany their wine in the adjoining wine tavern in the 1980s. However, it didn’t end there…

Daughter Carina, who was named German Wine Queen in October 2000, visited the set of a tv programme featuring Austrian television chef Johann Lafer as part of her role. Whilst there, she got to know and fell in love with Walter Curman. After training as a chef and being named Austria’s youngest master chef, Walter Curman found a position at Johann Lafer’s Michelin-starred restaurant at Stromburg Castle where he ran his cooking school and tv kitchen from 1998 to 2003 as well as being responsible for recipe development and event organisation.

But his encounter with the Mosel Wine Queen would soon bring changes. When she finished her studies, the oenologist decided to return to her parents’ business, and a gut feeling also led top chef Walter Curman from Styria to the Southern Wine Mosel. Without a specific business philosophy but with the aim of offering fresh, original and light cuisine, the couple transformed the rustic wine tavern into a contemporary restaurant: the CULINARIUM.

Creative cuisine – top-quality ingredients and international ideas!

Since April 2006, Carina and Walter Curman have been welcoming their guests here and enriching the gastronomy scene in Nittel with their charming and professional service as well as top-quality, fresh gourmet cuisine.

The menu changes seasonally and is characterised by an exceptionally diverse selection of choices. This ranges from classic Wiener schnitzel and Styrian fried chicken to lobster tail as part of a 4-course gourmet menu. And so it’s not surprising that the restaurant's clientèle is just as diverse: from hikers wanting to stop for a break to guests who seek out the restaurant for special occasions.

The wine list showcases the restaurant’s own wines, which are complemented by wines from winemaker friends e.g.from nearby Luxembourg and Styria.

Contemporary ambience and relaxed feel-good factor

Whether you are a wine lover or gourmet, the cosy atmosphere of the family-run restaurant will make you feel completely at home. Furnished in a contemporary style with wood and stone elements, the Culinarium offers seating for 50 inside and 60 outside.

For those wishing to extend their time spent in this warm and welcoming environment, the adjoining guest house “Schlafgut” (Sleep well) comes highly recommended. Only 300 metres away from the restaurant, bright and spacious hotel rooms await. A large balcony and terrace seating offer the chance to unwind as well as a tastefully designed relaxation area with sauna, whirlpool and relaxation room.

The CULINARIUM is much more than a place to dine, drink and stay overnight. The skills of top chef Walter Curman and his creative kitchen team, the warmth of Carina Curman and her family and the cohesion of the entire staff, together with the outstanding quality of the food and drink on offer and the relaxed atmosphere, make this establishment a very special place indeed.
