Wein- und Schloßstube restaurant at Schloß-Hotel Petry

Stay and dine like a lord or lady at this award-winning family-run establishment

When Walter and Elfriede Petry opened the Hotel-Weinhaus Petry in 1956, which had formerly been Hotel Kohlbacher and built by the their grandparents back in 1895 with eight guest rooms, no one had any idea of the success the family business would enjoy more than 60 years later.

It all began with the hiring of a young chef in March 1958. Hans Günter Bell arrived at Hotel-Weinhaus Petry and laid the foundation for today's excellent cuisine; in 1993 his son Oliver also joined the team.

But let’s go back to when it all began, when this young chef and the daughter of the house, Marlies Bell née Petry, developed a shared love of and passion for the hospitality industry. 1969 marked the start of the business’s next successful chapter. While Marlies Bell completed her apprenticeship as hotel manager, Hans-Günter Bell successfully passed his chef’s exams. The birth of their son Oliver in the same year rounded everything off perfectly.

In their parents’ footsteps

In the following years, Hotel-Weinhaus Petry was consistently expanded further, driven forward by its great success and quality of hospitality. Then in 1978, the adjacent castle in Treis-Karden was put up for sale. The Petry family decided to buy the 13th century building, which had previously served as a monastery, hospital, orphanage, school, home for the elderly, church-led convalescent home for mothers and most recently as a knitwear factory – and so Schloß-Hotel Petry came into being!

It soon became clear that Oliver Bell would follow in his parents’ footsteps. He began his chef training in 1986 and completed this three years later with top marks. Oliver then developed his skills further by working in various German establishments and successfully graduated in Culinary Arts in 1996.

He then went on to redesign the menu for Petry’s Schloßstube restaurant and let his creativity as chef unfold, impressing guests with outstanding dishes. He continues to transform regional, fresh produce into full-flavoured compositions, creating new, imaginative and contemporary culinary recipes on a daily basis.

One of Germany’s best

His skills have been recognised by the Guide Michelin hotel and restaurant guide, which most recently awarded the hotel’s cuisine the “Bib Gourmand” distinction in 2019.This makes the Wein und Schloßstube at Schloß-Hotel Petry one of the 733 best restaurants in Germany. Culinary excellence is characterised by a fair value-for-money approach – reason enough to name the kitchen team as experts in exceptional gourmet cuisine.

Generations of success

This confirmation of quality motivates the family to continue on their path and to pass on the ethos and skills of the business to others – it is with good reason that Schloß-Hotel Petry has been a recognised trainer in the food and hotel industry for many years. Son Lucas Bell has benefited from this, following in the footsteps of his grandparents and parents, and has recently completed his training in Hotel Management, including an additional qualification, in which he came top of his class. A successful future ahead seems certain for this exceptional establishment in Treis-Karden.

We highly recommend a visit to experience the hotel's outstanding cuisine for yourself – whether in the classically elegant Shloßstube restaurant or in the more rustic wine tavern.Seasonal and regional dishes await food lovers daily, from a light meal to a five course menu with select dishes from around the world. Selected wines from the cellar further emphasize the signature style of this exceptional cuisine.

“As you make your bed, so you must lie...”

And for those wanting to round off their evening at a later hour, after five courses and a glass or two of wine, the family-run Schloß-Hotel Petry offers diverse options for overnight stays. “As you make your bed, so you must lie,” so the proverb goes. Schloß-Hotel Petry offers rooms with stately, contemporary, elegant, relaxed and cosy theme options, catering to guests individual tastes. But one thing is certain – you will sleep like a lord or lady of the castle.
