Axel Pauly had already travelled a lot in the world. He worked at wineries in California and New Zealand and also did an internship at the German Embassy in Stockholm while studying at the University of Applied Sciences for Viticulture in Geisenheim. But moving away forever was never an option. His love for his homeland was simply too great for that - as was his attachment to the family winery, which he now runs with his parents Rudolf and Ursel, who are still very active in the business.
Traveling through this idyllic region along the Middle Moselle and arriving at the newly built, 70 square meter vinotheque of the Paulys, one can hardly believe the severe setbacks the family faced five years ago. In July 2011, a major fire reduced the entire production and storage hall to rubble, and just seven weeks later, hail destroyed almost the entire vineyard area. Axel Pauly briefly considered giving up, but instead of resigning, he rebuilt the business. With his wife Sabrina and his parents. And ultimately with truly remarkable success. In 2014, Gault Millau awarded the winery its second star, Vinum awarded 3 stars, Eichelmann named it one of the rising stars of the year at the Moselle, and with 4 stars, Stuart Pigott chose it as one of the 111 best young winemakers in Germany. The Pinot Noir is mentioned in the book "111 German Wines You Must Drink" by Carsten Henn.
The hallmark is clear fruit aromas and low alcohol content in the modern and regionally typical wines, where of course, like everywhere in the Moselle, Riesling plays the main role. In addition, the Paulys also produce high-quality red wines in small quantities from barriques, which are regularly chosen among the best in the area. The wines stand out not only for their taste but also visually through their labels designed by Swedish designers.
On closer inspection, the three curved lines reveal the profiles of the three Pauly generations: Peter, Rudolf, and Axel. Just as clear and authentic as the winemakers' wine style, the appearance of the vinotheque completed in 2015, featuring natural materials, is also striking: facade, floor, and counter in natural slate, the interior walls clad in larch, and the large table made of oak. A walkable glass panel allows a view into the barrique cellar in the basement, while a staircase leads between the sales area and entrance to the wine cellar of the old building. The vinotheque is among the 50 most beautiful vinotheques in Germany.
The three-sided glass facade of the vinotheque and the wooden terrace in front provide a magical view into the steeply sloped vineyards, and from the rooftop terrace above, a 360-degree panorama opens up overlooking the vineyards of the Axel Pauly estate. One just has to stand here and look around to understand why Axel Pauly did not stay away and was drawn back home to the Middle Moselle.

That's why we always recommend calling briefly, especially when it comes to a wine tasting, as we like to take some time for it.
