The tradition of our winery dates back to 1803. During the secularization under Napoleon, our ancestors bought vineyards in the Maximiner Klosterlay. The winery is based on these vineyards to this day. We are particularly proud of a very special vineyard: in 1896 our parcel in Maximin Herrenberg was planted with real roots. One of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world. This vineyard has been preserved in the original to this day and provides the basis for our top wines.

The history of the winery can be traced back to the time of Napoleon. At that time an ancestor of Karl Josef Loewen was administrator of the Detzemer Gutshof of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maximin. With the secularization he took over the vineyards of the monastery in Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay. Today's Carl Loewen winery is based on this. In 1982 vineyards in Laurentiuslay were acquired, in 1995 a vineyard in Thörnicher Ritsch. In 2008 the Carl Schmitt-Wagner winery in Longuich was taken over, with which Karl Josef Loewen, the current owner, has once again enlarged his vineyard property. His major locations are Laurentiuslay (gray slate), Maximin Herrenberg (south-facing, red slate), Ritsch (brittle gray slate) and Maximin Klosterlay (blue slate), he also owns vineyards in the Leiwener monastery garden (where, for example, Varidor and "old vines" come from) and in the Pölicher hero. In addition to Riesling, he grows a little Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau. Meanwhile, son Christopher supports his father in the business.
