The microclimate in the Wittlicher Senke, which protectively surrounds the vineyards of Losen-Bockstanz, can almost be described as Mediterranean. In the steep south-/southwest locations, the loose vines lean towards the sun at a perfect 90° angle, so that they can catch even the slightest ray of sunlight until the early evening hours. The slate soils characterize this region with a unique terroir. During the day they store the warmth, which they slowly return to the plant and soil at night. Their sponge-like water retention capacity protects the plants from drought stress - the result is a healthy harvest, a high must weight and finely balanced wines. It is also the slate that is found as a filigree, mineral structure in the taste of these wines - a unique interplay of fruit and mineral aspects that a master winemaker like Thomas Losen knows how to stage to great wines with international renown. The philosophy of Thomas Losen is very simple: In the vineyard, even without an organic label, the work is done in a way that is close to nature. Because, only where the natural conditions of soil, location and climate complement each other optimally, healthy, stable plants thrive. We fertilize with our own and only organic compost. The slate soil, enriched with humus, is a rich breeding ground for the vines and at the same time an excellent water reservoir without creating stagnant moisture. No insecticides are used at all. The work in the vineyard is characterized by a constant in and out through the steep vine lanes. Only the most experienced employees are allowed to work on the vines for the early, yield-reducing pruning, which must be carried out with the greatest precision. With the finest intuition and hard, intensive vineyard work, Thomas Losen sets the course for the best quality of the coming vintage right at the vineyard. Under his care, the wines of special quality are created here, with great purity, firm structure and mineral presence.
