The Appel wine estate has its origins in the 17th century in the "Glogisch" house in Niederleuken. Until the middle of the 20th century, the business was a mixed operation with viticulture and agriculture.
After Julius Appel completed his training as a winemaker, he moved to Trierer Straße in 1964. From 1973, Mathilde and Julius Appel managed the winery as a full-time business with a vineyard area of 2 hectares. In 1979, a new winery building and a wine tasting room were added.
Armin Appel, the current owner, completed his training as a winemaker in 1988 and became a vineyard technician in 1994. He joined the family business in 1996 and became the cellar master in 2000. In 2005, he built a new machinery hall. The vineyard area expanded from 2.5 hectares to 9 hectares between 1996 and 2012.
In the top sites Saarburger Rausch, Ockfener Bockstein, and Ayler Kupp, more than 90% Riesling, 3% Rivaner, and 5% Pinot Noir are harvested on 10 hectares of vineyard area. Vineyard work at the Appel Winery mainly means manual labor with up to 1,500 hours per hectare under extremely difficult conditions. In artisan tradition, wines are produced that reflect the potential of the Great Saar sites. The cool temperatures particularly favor Riesling, which can ripen here from flowering to grape harvest for up to 140 days. This, combined with the rugged slate steep slopes, produces wines with a unique aromatic spectrum and a delicate and noble taste. The Riesling achieves a mostly light, yet lasting and distinctive style here through its minerality and pronounced fruit acidity.
