Three generations of the family have built up the Johann Peter Mertes winery in Kanzem on the Saar - and have continued to develop it. Today, in the fourth generation, the aim is to take the experience of the fathers into account when making wine.
The winery in Kanzem on the Saar is located halfway between the ancient Roman city of Trier and the idyllic Saarburg. Here, top-quality Riesling has been cultivated in preferred locations for many centuries. It is only about six kilometers to the mouth of the Saar into the Moselle. Since the 1980s, when a narrow loop of the Saar was separated from shipping traffic by a canal, Kanzem has been on a romantic island. The vineyards are situated in the steep slopes of Kanzem, Wawern, Saarburg, and Ockfen, which are planted with the noble Riesling as a white grape variety and Pinot Noir. Attached to the winery is a small distillery, where fine spirits of high quality are distilled.
Locations: Kanzemer Altenberg, Kanzemer Sonnenberg, Ockfener Bockstein, Saarburger Stirn, Wawerner Goldberg, and Wawerner Ritterpfad.
Awards: Der Feinschmecker 2020, Vinum 2020, Gault Millau 2020
Other products: Riesling pomace brandy
