As a deed of gift shows, ancestors of the Schaefer family already engaged in viticulture in the year 1121. The winery has always been operated as a small family business, and the passion for Riesling has been passed down from generation to generation.
Christoph Schaefer joined the winery in 2002 and benefited from the wealth of experience of his father Willi. In the summer of 2015, Willi completely handed over the family legacy to his son Christoph, who has been running the business together with his wife Andrea since then.
The small, fragmented vineyard property of 4.2 hectares is located in the steep top sites of Graacher Domprobst and Graacher Himmelreich, as well as in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr.
The Willi Schaefer winery is known for its characterful and elegant Rieslings. These wines enchant almost weightlessly with fine fruit acidity, perfectly balanced sweetness, and enormous longevity. To achieve this, the Schaefers rely on an elaborate harvest, careful aging in traditional fuder barrels, and their intuition. Although there are only a few bottles, the winery is gaining international attention.
