State exhibition in Trier

Marcus Aurelius

15 June until 23 November 2025

Following on from Trier’s well-received state exhibitions on "Constantine the Great" in 2007, "Nero" in 2016, "Karl Marx" in 2018 and "The Fall of the Roman Empire" in 2022, the city is hosting another spectacular event this year: "Marcus Aurelius". Expect outstanding exhibits across two museums in one of Germany’s most beautiful cities!

Two museums - two exhibitions

The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius is widely regarded as the epitome of a good ruler and philosopher. His "introspections" are still part of world literature today. But was he really?

In the coming year, two museums in Trier will be dedicating themselves to the life and work of the famous ruler and will be exploring this very question, among others. Top exhibits from well-known museums throughout Europe and exciting artefacts from the Trier collections will be on display.

Following sensational exhibition successes, the city of Trier, Germany's centre of antiquity, has established itself as a location for exhibitions on Roman times. There is hardly any other place in Central Europe where the ancient heritage can still be experienced as authentically as in the city on the Mosel. The city's landmark, the Porta Nigra, will play a special role in 2025, as its construction began during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
