A delight in every way
At Landhaus Halferschenke in Dieblich near Koblenz, Carina and Christoph Schmah treat their guests to gourmet cuisine in warm, relaxed surroundings.
Located not far from where the Mosel flows into the Rhine, the Halferschenke has a tradition of hospitality dating back to the early 19th century. Originally, it served the hard-working men (Halfer), who towed heavy barges by horse power along the towpaths of rivers. While the age-old profession died out, the original inn with its hearty dishes and well-kept guest rooms remained. It has been run by a succession of families over the years, who have all worked to establish and then build on the hotel restaurant’s good reputation across the region.
In May 2020, the historic house became a dream come true for Carina and Christoph Schmah, who are both passionate about cultivating their culinary craft. Thanks to a wealth of experience in their field and several star awards as chefs, they offer their guests the very best.
We want to create a true gourmet experience with French-inspired cuisine and high-quality ingredients, preferably sourced from the region and organically grown. But we've also kept the Halferschenke’s tradition of providing a comfortable and warm atmosphere. It’s all pretty relaxed here.
Carina Schmah
Christoph Schmah doesn’t have any plans for another Michelin star. He wants his style and restaurant to feel accessible. The balance of excellent cooking, distinguished by two red Gault&Millau chef's hats, and a totally relaxed setting is a success.
The menu carries the sentiment of the two hosts, "Life is about collecting experiences, and not just the passing of time." For the Schmahs, such experiences are first and foremost about pleasure: savouring, taking everything in and feeling at ease. Sometimes, as with the oysters, this is at an international gourmet level, sometimes it’s more traditional and typical of the Mosel region, such as the creamed veal goulash; the quality of ingredients makes all the difference.
We know many of our supply partners personally...including local farmers and hunters.
The wines are mainly from the Mosel region’s wine producers although wines from the nearby Rhine Valley are also on the menu. Nothing is stilted or grandiose; the Halferschenke aims to make entering the world of upscale cuisine easy as well as accessible in terms of price. This also fits in with the country house’s rural, down-to-earth surroundings.
Guests who choose to stay here primarily do so because they want a cosy and convenient hideaway that is nevertheless well connected to locations, such as Koblenz, which offer high-calibre entertainment and attractions. Although it’s only a short journey from cities in the Rhineland to the destination in Dieblich, there is a sense of being far removed from everyday life. With its four modern country-style rooms, the Halferschenke is the perfect holiday stay for people who want to plan their time away themselves and who appreciate privacy and comfort. It’s even possible, with prior arrangement, for your four-legged friend to be part of your Mosel relaxation break.
One of the reasons that nature enthusiasts and hikers come to us is the number of certified "Traumschleifen" (Dream Loop) trails close by. The ability to explore the natural landscape by day and then enjoy a relaxed dinner in the evening... it’s this that makes a stay with us an all-round pleasurable experience.
