Peter Lex knows what it’s like to reach for the stars as a chef; he has, for example, been part of the Michelin-awarded team at Harald Rüssel’s Landhaus St. Urban. Further stops on his culinary career path include Merkles Rebstock in Endingen at the Kaiserstuhl, Ketschauer Hof, Restaurant Freundstück in Deidesheim, Schlosshotel Lerbach in Bergisch Gladbach, Restaurant Stüffel in Hamburg as well as Cá d'Oro and Kempinski in St. Moritz. Lex’s experience in the field of haute cuisine make for equally impressive reading with positions including Chef de Partie Patisserie, Chef de Partie Entremétier and Sous Chef. In 2014, he won first place for Germany in the international "Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs" competition.

So anyone visiting Peter and Katja Lex’s restaurant in Leiwen, which opened its doors in 2020, can expect first-class cuisine and outstanding service. Both young restaurateurs have worked their way up in their profession, which is very much their vocation, and know how to make guests happy. But they also have a fresh approach; anyone who associates such a professional and reputable calibre with high prices or an antiquated, somewhat stiff atmosphere, will be happily proven otherwise.

We want to show that top-class cuisine can be done in a very uncomplicated, informal and affordable way,

the couple says, describing their philosophy. For their main course, food lovers are always presented with a choice of vegetarian and vegan dishes, fish and assorted meat options, all of which successfully bring together often regional ingredients with a refined balance of classic Mosel and haute cuisine.

In opening their restaurant, Peter and Katja Lex also took over from the previously popular "Sektstuff" venue, turning it into a welcoming location with a bright, neat interior that combines relaxed contemporary design with typical Mosel cosiness. Wines, including those of the sparkling variety, are of course still available, from St. Laurentiushof, Weingut Steffen-Lex in Osann and from other predominantly young winemakers in the Mosel wine region between Trittenheim and Detzem.

On the one hand, our style and selection appeal to people who want to discover new things and are open to surprises. But those looking for familiar feel-good surroundings for experiencing fine food are just as welcome.

As such, the well-known guiding rule for travellers holds true for Restaurant Lex: eat where the locals eat.

Restaurant Lex also has a charmingly furnished guesthouse comprising apartments as well as a double room. So, needless to say, the most delicious and comfortable stay in Leiwen includes savouring fine food in the restaurant of an evening and using the guesthouse as a base for excursions to the region's vineyards and many unique wine villages during the daytime. It’s also easily possible to cater for yourself in the holiday apartments and to perhaps treat yourself to "just" one or two of the restaurant’s culinary creations.

Leiwen is located on a particularly picturesque loop of the Mosel, where the gentle rolling landscape of the Mosel Valley gradually gives way to more dramatic steep slopes. Trier, Germany's oldest city, with its many ancient sites, and Bernkastel-Kues, the half-timbered medieval gem along the Middle Mosel, are both close by. A daytime hike along the Moselsteig Trail or a tour on the Mosel Cycle Path is certain to whet your appetite ready for a relaxed, delicious finish to a day well spent.
