The Moselle vineyard peach

A special fruit with tradition

A fruit that is deeply rooted in the region thrives along the Moselle: the Moselle vineyard peach. With its rich, red flesh and distinctive aroma, it delights locals and visitors alike.

The fruit, which originated in China, reached the Moselle via Persia as early as Roman times, where it was successfully cultivated. Today, around 10,000 vineyard peach trees grow here—most of them in the district of Cochem-Zell, along the picturesque river bends between Cochem and Reil.

The Moselle region offers a very special natural spectacle in spring when the vineyard peach trees are in bloom. From late March to early April, the bright pink blossoms transform the steep vineyard slopes into a colorful sea of flowers. This time of year attracts nature lovers, photographers, and hikers alike, who explore the slopes and admire the magnificent blossoms.

Peach blossom hike

The mild temperatures and awakening nature make hiking in spring a special experience.

We recommend thevineyard peach blossom hike from Ediger-Eller via Bremm to Neef during this time of year. The seven-kilometre tour leads past blossoming peach orchards, and hikers always have Calmont, Europe's steepest vineyard, in view along the way. Local wineries and nature guides offer guided tours through the sea of blossoms and invite visitors to enjoy the first rays of sunshine at their establishments.

Along the Moselsteig trail, too, on stage 15 from Zell (Mosel) to Neef and stage 16 from Neef to Ediger-Eller, you will be greeted in spring by pink blossoms that shine like delicate splashes of colour in the landscape.

It's time to celebrate!

Every year, vineyard peaches are celebrated with special festivals along the Moselle. In spring, the "Blütenmarkt" (blossom market) in Cochem attracts numerous visitors. Here, local producers present their diverse range of vineyard peach products. Visitors can sample the culinary delights and try regional specialities such as jams, liqueurs and wines.

Late summer is harvest time, when the dark red fruits are ripe. The harvest is then celebrated in many places, such as at the "Erntemarkt des MoselWeinbergPfirsich" (harvest market) in Cochem, where freshly picked peaches are processed and sold directly on site.

The Moselle vineyard peach is much more than just a tasty fruit – it is the basis for numerous regional specialities. Fruity liqueurs that perfectly capture the intense aroma of the peach are particularly popular. Fine brandies and secco with a hint of vineyard peach are also among the special delicacies.

In addition to beverages, it is primarily jams, jellies and chutneys that wonderfully bring out the intense sweetness and acidity of the fruit. Combined with game dishes, cheese or savoury foods, vineyard peaches add a sophisticated note. Sweet desserts such as vineyard peach tart or sorbet also delight with their bright colour and distinctive flavour.

Whether hiking through the blossoming hillsides, visiting the flower market or enjoying fresh peach products, vineyard peaches are a real highlight and certainly a delicious souvenir for loved ones back home.
