It’s impossible to say exactly how many wineries there are in the Mosel region... there are definitely several thousand; some are highly professional with honed traditions, others are experimental and innovative, and there are also those that are straightforward family-run businesses. Each winery has its own unmistakable style. Added to this are the different locations that give the wines their character, and the fact that other varieties besides Riesling have long thrived on the sun-drenched Mosel slopes.

Those who want to discover Mosel wines are therefore confronted with a wealth of variety. A lot is down to chance. There are however a number of excellent local and regional vinotheks spread throughout the Mosel region that present both wine connoisseurs and novices with exciting selections. Offering stylish settings, they make it easy to sample the wines of several winemakers in one place and gain a good overview.

And many vinotheks of course also offer other delicious drops; sparkling wines, liqueurs and marc round off the assortment and show that there is much more to be found in this land of wine culture.

The vinothek in the vaulted cellars of the St. Nikolaus Hospital in Bernkastel-Kues is a particularly impressive example. With more than 150 different varieties on offer, this wine culture centre is considered the world’s largest vinothek specialising in Riesling wines from along the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer. Quality wines from all stages of harvest, including Trockenbeerenauslese (from select concentrated grapes) and popular ice wines, are available for tasting. All senses are engaged as the location’s magic not only involves smelling and tasting, but also the visual experience of the vinothek’s historic surroundings. Such Mosel wine enchantment means no one leaves this beautiful place empty-handed. The wines you taste can be bought from the Mosel Shop there to take home with you and there are also a host of fine wine gifts available for special occasions.

Many an excursion begins or ends at the BREVA vinothek in Ernst, along the banks of the Mosel. It’s a collaborative project with the fitting title “Wein & Weg” (Wine & Way) as here wine tasting and discovery are combined with hiking tips from the tourist information office, which is also located in the vinothek. So you can discover that special Mosel feeling and experience first-hand where the wine that flows into the bottles grows. Wineries from Ernst, Bruttig-Fankel, Mesenich and Ellenz-Poltersdorf have joined forces for the BREVA project and showcase their outstanding varieties at the vinothek. This innovative combination conceptof tourist information and vinothek also functions as a gallery; the space hosts various temporary art exhibitions.

Inspiring enjoyment in a historic luxury villa

In the town of Traben-Trarbach, which is famous for its Art Nouveau architecture and located roughly halfway along the meandering course of the Mosel in Germany, a special vinothek is bringing its motto “The whole Mosel in a glass” to life. Around 150 wines from sun-drenched vineyards along the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer can be tasted as well as purchased in a classical villa built by the grand wine merchant family Langguth back in 1890. Visitors to the vinothek “Die Mosel” are introduced to established highlights of the region as well as interesting newcomers. It’s inspiring and a joy to savour the delicacies that accompany the wine here whilst looking out over the river and the district of Trarbach. The fact that Traben-Trarbach was once as important for wine culture as Bordeaux is palpable in this historic luxury villa. The flair from those early times is still very much present.

Big names at the Klein family

Located on the Laurentiusberg in Saarburg, at the Saar end of the Mosel region, is the vinothek Bonsai & Wein, run by the Klein family. There are some top name wines represented here including those from the internationally renowned wineries Van Volxem, Von Othegraven, Egon Mueller and Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt, all of which can be sampled and purchased without any additional price surcharges. Wines from the Saar, one of the premium winegrowing areas of the Mosel region, impress with their distinctive terroir.
